Daiso and similar Japanese retail chains have long been kings in the market of cheap and amazing finds.
The items you discover in these stores range from “this is the tool that will enable my highly specific way of chopping onions” to “I never knew onions can be chopped that way”.
The crazy ones, like Don Don Donki, are practically a metropolis in their own right. Food courts, bars, fresh produce – they’ve got everything covered.
But, entrepreneurs closer to home aren’t about to give up the throne without a fight.
In fact, a brand from right next door has quietly made its way into the domain and is ready to stage an uprising.
S$1.60 Everything
It’s honestly a mystery how we didn’t discover it sooner – Eco-Shop in Bedok North which sells everything at S$1.60!
Originally, it was supposed to be everything $1.50.
But they had to adjust their price back in Oct 2019, according to images found online.
And so, it became the “everything $1.60″ shop in Bedok.
According to Facebook page, Auntie Approved Deals, you can find a wide range of products over there, many of which are familiar to the local scene.
Plastic stools, water bottles, things that make good Asian mom stories.
Not Just Household Necessities
But the product categories extend way beyond household necessities.
There are sports equipment like badminton racquets, swimming goggles and caps.
Seeing as you’re most definitely participating in this fancy Apple watch-driven active lifestyle movement, these can surely come in handy.
Besides, they also have grocery items.
Canned drinks at S$0.40 per unit! You can get drunk on chrysanthemum this Mid Autumn Festival.
Food items like instant noodle which, despite their pricing, seem to have reasonable expiry dates too.
There are even decorative items that hold some IG-potential. For instance, these glass jars and pot plants got me itching for a budget-friendly bedroom makeover.
A Friendly Face from Our Neighbour
Eco-Shop is an everyday brand from our neighbour across the causeway. In Johor, it boasts 19 outlets, selling a vast array of items at MYR2.10.
Two years ago, the chain extended its foothold to Singapore with a storefront in Bedok North.
Admittedly, the items are less interesting and quirky than that of the Japanese franchises, as they respond to much more local demands.
And maybe the quality is of a different calibre.
Regardless, the store offers practical items at exceptionally affordable prices. At one point or another, we would certainly benefit from a trip there.
Or at least our moms would 🙂
