Taking a carpool to JB or a grab taxi to JB? Yeah, it can get pricey. I mean, a grab to JB can cost you a whole lotta money. But it’s about to get a lot cheaper.

Grab From Singapore to JB

If you go to Johor Bahru regularly, here’s the news that might just make you cheer and make your way there right now: Grab has just launched a Singapore-to-JB carpool service.

In the simplest term, it means you can sit in the comfort of a car as someone drives you to JB from Singapore.

GrabHitch is a carpool service in which drivers and passengers, who are going to the same place, can use an app to connect. Launched in November last year, it joined other carpool services apps in Singapore like RYDE and Sharetransport.sg. This has become a godsend for some: I have a friend who works in CBD and has never taken the public transport to and fro work since discovering RYDE.

But now, GrabHitch has taken carpooling to a whole new level: carpooling to JB.

The common complaints for people who commute to JB regularly are always the same: SBS 170 got stuck in traffic, leading the queue in Kranji MRT Station to a standstill, and having to squeeze into the bus so badly that bus conductors have to be around to “push” you in. Taxis and Uber/GrabCar don’t drive into JB as well, so the only way to have a comfortable journey is by driving—which some of us might not have the luxury of owning a car.

Known as GrabHitch JB-SG, it works the same as any carpooling service—the only difference is that you’re moving from one country to another. With many planning their JB trips in advance, passengers could pre-book their rides up to seven days in advance, and could also get a GrabHitch thirty minutes before “departure” (haha?).

Depending on where you want to go, the cost from Singapore to JB is about $9 to $14, while it will cost about RM9 to RM23 from JB to Singapore.

Available from 20 June 2016 onwards, it is set to ease the congestion between Singapore and JB. If you’re not familiar with JB, AEON Bukit Indah is a LARGE shopping mall that drivers like to go via the second link. AEON is much like a big department store like Singapore’s Takashimaya—but of course, at a more pocket-friendly price.

And lest you’re wondering, you will encounter people near JB City Square touting for passengers back to Singapore in a car—one trip from JB to Singapore is about $30 to $40 per person, and they’ll usually wait until there are enough passengers (say, four of you) before they start the trip.

I don’t know about you, but I guess City Square and AEON Bukit Indah are going to be extremely crowded after 20 June 2016.

Really 几够力一下!
