On 28 Apr 2022, a 73-year-old man was found dead in his home.
The suspect is a foreign domestic worker who had worked for the family for two years.
She has been arrested by the police and will be charged on Saturday.
Here’s what you need to know.
Neighbours: 73-Year-Old Man Was Weak & Frail
The couple lived in a public housing block along Bishan Street 23.
On 28 April 2022 in the evening, the man’s wife returned to a house with all its lights turned off.
Upon entering the house, she discovered her husband lying motionlessly on the bed in the living room.
The wife then went to her neighbour, 67-year-old Mdm Lim, and got her to check on her husband.
Mdm Lim, who spoke to Straits Times, said that the man was unresponsive.
It was added that she couldn’t tell if the man had suffered injuries.
The police were alerted to the incident at around 8:50 PM. Paramedics pronounced the man dead on the scene.
Maid Arrested For Suspected Murder
The foreign domestic worker was not in the flat when the body was discovered.
On 29 Feb (Friday), the police said that they’ve placed the 49-year-old foreign domestic worker under arrest for her suspected involvement in the unfortunate incident.
“Through follow up investigations, the 49-year-old woman, who is a migrant domestic worker in the deceased’s household, was arrested subsequently.”
She will be charged in court with murder on Saturday, an offence which carries the death penalty.
FDW Have Worked For The Couple For Two Years
According to a neighbour, the husband was previously working as a taxi driver.
However, about two years ago, the husband got ill and had to be pushed around in a wheelchair whenever he leaves the house.
It was also around that time that she saw the foreign domestic worker helping out around the house.
Alleged Salary Dispute
The wife of the deceased was a jovial woman who would speak to neighbours when she sees them.
The wife also seemed to have an amicable relationship with the foreign domestic worker.
A neighbour once saw the wife return home with packets of food.
When asked why she didn’t ask the helper to prepare meals for the family, the wife said:
“I didn’t want to give her more work to do’. She is a good person.”
However, another neighbour who lives several levels below the couple told reporters that the wife had sought advice from her before.
She had spoken to her about some of her disputes with the foreign domestic worker, including a pay dispute.
No Weird Sounds Heard On That Day
The block is located in a quiet neighbourhood and neighbours approached by TODAY were shocked by the alleged murder.
On that particular day, neighbours reported that they did not hear or see anything out of the ordinary.
“It’s very peaceful here… It’s shocking and we didn’t know there was a murder till we read it in the news.”
However, at around 9pm on 28 Apr 2022, there were “police everywhere”.
A staff working at the convenience store at the block said the police had approached her to ask if they could view the store’s CCTV footage if there was a need to do so.
