Driving cars are actually difficult, despite what modern culture of getting a driver’s license once you reach a certain age might have you believe.
Doesn’t exactly help that cars are a symbol of wealth, so people might see cars differently from what I see them as; efficient vehicles in both killing and mobility. (The rise of PMD accidents highlights this more than anything else, though that’s unrelated to this article.)
Anyway, nobody died in this accident, which is fortunate for everybody involved.
By everybody, I mean the railing and the 67-year-old woman.
Fell 10m down when trying to U-turn
This happened along 388 Clementi Road on 9 Aug 2019, after she bought some flowers at a florist and nursery.
At the nursery, there’s only one entrance which also serves as an exit that requires drivers to move up a slope. When exiting, U-turning is required.
You can see the entrance of the florist here, which leads into a slope:
The 67-year-old woman was a frequent customer of the nursery, so the employees there recognise her car.
According to an employee at the nursery, it is believed that when trying to go out of the nursery, she stepped on the wrong pedal when trying to U-turn and drove into the rail instead.
The BMW then dove 10m down.
It hit a lamppost on the way down and overturned. The car itself is deformed from the damage.
The police were alerted to the accident at 2.28 pm, and she was taken to the National University Hospital while still conscious.
Another angle of the accident can be seen on Stomp.
The police had closed off 3 of the 4 lanes because of the accident, which resulted in a minor jam.
FYI
Some may look at this accident and wonder if this meant older people should not be allowed to drive for reasons.
Currently, anyone who is 65 years old and above needs to be medically certified by a registered medical practitioner to drive.

Other than the medical examination, a license renewal is also required every 3 years.
But really, the press wrong pedal is kind of a speculation. Police investigations are still ongoing.
This could have happened to anyone. And if PMD accidents are to be a reference… anything as well.
So yeah, stay vigilant and stay safe.
