A man jumped onto train tracks to retrieve his dropped mobile phone at Boon Lay MRT Station on 13 Mar 2025.
The incident occurred during morning rush hour at 8:15 AM.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the man climbed over the 1.5-metre platform screen doors after accidentally dropping his phone onto the tracks below. He successfully recovered his phone and climbed back onto the platform.
A 53-year-old employee working near the station told reporters she didn’t notice the incident during the busy peak hours. “But risking his life for a phone was way too dangerous,” she said.
SMRT’s Response
The President of SMRT Trains, Lam Sheau Kai, confirmed the incident to Shin Min Daily News.
He stated that SMRT takes this incident very seriously because trespassing onto tracks presents severe safety risks, including the possibility of being struck by a train or electrocuted by the high-voltage third rail.
Lam reminded the public that such rash actions endanger lives and may disrupt services, affecting other passengers. Additionally, emergency braking can put passengers on trains at risk of injury.
He emphasized that for everyone’s safety, passengers should stay away from tracks. If any items fall onto the tracks, passengers should seek staff assistance rather than attempting to retrieve them personally. For safety reasons, dropped items can only be recovered after service hours.
“We thank passengers for their cooperation in keeping everyone safe and journeys smooth,” said Lam.
Quick-thinking Passengers Save the Day
Other passengers, alarmed by the man’s actions, pressed the emergency button, preventing the next train from entering the station and potentially saving the man’s life.
Lam also mentioned that after witnessing the man climb over platform gates to retrieve his phone, passengers activated the Emergency Stop Plunger.
“Thankfully, someone activated the emergency button, stopping an approaching train just in time, preventing the trespasser from being injured,” Lam said.
“Our staff quickly intervened, apprehended the trespasser, and called the police,” he added.
Well, some people say our phones matter more than our lives—perhaps this incident just proves their point.
