This Bowl of Noodles Costs SGD$447 in Taiwan. Here’s What The Foodie in You Needs to Know

Taiwan is a practical food paradise.

In fact, the food’s one of the primary reasons why so many tourists frequent the nation.

And one of them happens to be the beef noodles.

Mhmm… looks tasty.

Boasting trademark strong and flavourful broths, coupled with tender melt-in-your-mouth cuts of beef, the noodles in Taiwan are an arguable notch above any replicas served elsewhere.

And the good thing’s that you can find it almost anywhere in Taiwan too! That’s how popular the dish is!

But like everything, there’s got to be a best version of it.

Only problem here? You’ve got to fork out quite a bit.

Yeah, prepare to break your piggy banks.

The Beef Bowl that costs SGD$447

In Taipei, there’s a small specialty beef noodles shop that’s offering a bowl of their best beef noodles, for no less than TWD 10,000 (SGD447).

In fact, it’s been crowned the “world’s most expensive beef noodle soup” by CNN.

The shop, going by the name of Niu Ba Ba (literally translated to Cow Father), offers just eight types of beef noodle soup that range from the already questionable TWD 500 (SGD$22) to the whopping TWD 10,000 (SGD$440) bowl.

For that price, you would naturally expect a massive portion of noodles, adorned with generous helpings of rich beef.

Nuh-uh. It doesn’t work that way.

Yep, that’s the SGD$440 dish. 120 grams of noodles, five four-inch squares of beef, one piece of tendon, soup and… that’s all?

Before you mark it as a scam and flame us for supporting their gimmick, let me explain how the proprietors think.

Well, the founder of the shop, Wang Tsung Yuan, and his son, Eric Wang, are strict believers of the notion ‘quality over quantity’.

Each bowl of beef noodles uses at least four premium beef cuts that are imported from Australia and the United States. And only the best beef cuts make their way into the dish.

But the beef is not the star of the meal.

Unsurprisingly, it’s the soup.

Wang has a goal to make the “world’s best beef noodle soup”, and to fulfill such a lofty ambition, he spent years mastering the art of the beef noodle soup.

He would blend six different stocks from the tendons, tenderloin and bone, and reach for that taste their shop’s come to be renowned for.

And then there are the noodles as well. Customers have 5 different types to choose from.

Do people actually order it?

Seeing how pricey it is, is the dish popular with customers?

According to Wang, at least one person orders the Presidential Beef Noodle Soup almost every day.

In fact, he recommends that you make a reservation two days in advance as it’s a time-consuming process!

Should you go for it?

Honestly, it’s a tough decision. Even their cheapest bowl of noodles isn’t exactly that affordable (at SGD$22), so money-savers would be hard-pressed to make a trip.

After all, we Singaporeans go to Taiwan for the cheap and good food, right?

Reviews have been pretty good, though. Majority gave it five-stars, and one of them even expressed, “Having the opportunity to come to Niu Ba Ba for a bowl of beef noodle soup is one of the best things in life.”

Seeing as how there are so many beef noodle soup shops in not just Taiwan, but the entire world, that’s probably one of the highest praise one could deliver!

But there were some one-star reviews too, so maybe the dishes weren’t as up-to-par as they expected.

Apart from being featured on the likes of CNN and Daily Mail, it has also scored plus points with customers; so why not give it a try, especially if you happen to be in Taiwan right now and combing for the next best thing since sliced bread?

You never know; it might just be the best thing you’ve ever tasted! If not, at least it would be the most expensive thing you’ve ever tasted #justsaying
