Bubble tea. Boba. Milk tea.

Utter these words within 25 kilometres of an Asian and our ears will stand up like a police dog that just sniffed out some illicit drugs.

To some, bubble tea is simply another cold beverage, but to us, it’s a basic necessity, in addition to food, water, and air.

Plus, it’s a proven fact that a bubble tea a day keeps the doctor away, mostly because it’s so unhealthy medical professionals have given up on us.

But then the Covid-19 pandemic came along and took away the one thing in life that never failed to give us pleasure.

Just look at what it did to this famous street in Malaysia.

Open a bubble tea store in Asia and people will flock to it like Singaporeans to a reopened McDonald’s outlet.

Last year, a street named SS15 in Subang Jaya was filled with long queues of thirsty Malaysians waiting to get their daily fix of bubble tea.

The street was nicknamed “Bubble Tea Street” because it has several bubble tea stores for boba lovers to choose from.

But the street is now a shadow of its former self, as many bubble tea stores are going out of business due to the Covid-19 outbreak and its lockdowns, reported World of Buzz.

Facebook user Keith Kuang shared a video of the desolate street, showing many stores with ‘for rent’ signs hanging from their signboards.

In his post, Keith wrote:

“When reality strikes. I see millions of dollars drained out, I see the disappointment of business owners. I see sadness, I see losing of hopes.”

“Most of the shops are closing down. They are putting up for rent, or to sell,” Keith says in the video, as he drives down the now-empty street, showing the many shops that have closed down since the coronavirus pandemic.

This is just sad.

Despite the gloomy-looking street and the generally pessimistic mood around the world, Keith remains positive.

At the same time, I see the possibility of reshaping the ecosystem here. I see the stabilising of the demand and not speculation. I choose to see hope.”

“The wave is neither cruel nor merciful, face it with no judgement, adjust our mentality and start to adapt to the new normal and may all businesses strive again.”

It’s sad to see so many businesses crumbling because of Covid-19, but hopefully, they will thrive again once this pandemic dies down.

And I’m not just saying this because I want more bubble tea.

Maybe those shops should have tagged with eateries to continue their business. Like how McDonald’s tagged their food with KFC, whereby you can buy a Filet-O-Fish if you buy a Zinger meal.
