Motorcycle crashes are a fairly common sight in local dashcam videos, but one occurring in Bukit Batok was especially terrifying.
Motorcyclist Sent Flying in Bukit Batok Accident
In a video shared on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page, the accident showed a motorcycle and a bus waiting at a red light.
It occurred on 8 August at 4:20 pm, at the T-junction of Bukit Batok Road and Pavilion Circle.
All seemed normal, with traffic rules obeyed. Just then, a blue car came rushing down Bukit Batok Road at high speeds, seemingly oblivious to the red light.
It violently smashed right into the rear of the motorcycle, ploughing through the junction as well.
The motorcyclist was literally sent flying and spinning into the air from the sheer force of impact. He landed hard on the road.
As for the motorcycle itself, it was heavily damaged, with many parts clearly seen breaking off and scattering onto the road during the crash.
After the crash, the motorcyclist lay unmoving on the road for about 15 seconds, with passers-by crossing the junction and seemingly ignoring him. Eventually, someone in blue arrived to check on him.
A person appearing to be the bus driver also alighted the bus to look at the location of the collision.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Goody Feed that they were alerted of the accident at 4:20 pm. They conveyed the victim, still conscious somehow, to the National University Hospital.
Driver Who Caused Collision Arrested
The Straits Times also reported that the police arrested the 34-year-old driver of the blue car for dangerous driving causing grievous hurt.
Photos shared on the SGRoad Blocks / Traffic News Telegram chat showed the aftermath of the accident.
The injured 31-year-old motorcyclist was still lying at the same spot in the junction, surrounded by several people.
These included a police officer and a woman who knelt beside him, checking on him.
A second photo showed the offending blue car, which had stopped in the middle lane, a short distance further down Bukit Batok Road.
Two police officers were inspecting the vehicle while an unknown person walked away from the car while making a call.
It is unclear how soon after the collision these photos were taken.
Netizens Shocked by Apparent Lack of Care by Passers-By
Given the terrifying impact of the crash, it’s an incredible stroke of luck that the motorcyclist survived.
Motorcyclists made up 50% of road fatalities despite motorcycles being just 14.4% of Singapore’s vehicles. Just a few weeks ago, a motorcyclist died in a Jurong accident.
One commenter on the Facebook post claimed to be a friend of the victim of this Bukit Batok accident. They alleged that the motorcyclist was in critical condition in the hospital.
While many were outraged at the driver’s recklessness in causing such a serious accident, others expressed displeasure with the lack of immediate assistance by the passers-by.
The actions contrasted with the typical Singaporean passers-by’s immediate reaction to help those injured in accidents.
With that said, it’s still difficult to judge actions based on a single dashcam video with a limited view.
