If you jaywalk often, you would have noticed that more and more road dividers are now lined with tall green barriers.
This not only prevents people from jaywalking, but also stops vehicles from crashing into each other if they happen to veer to the side in an accident.
If a vehicle happened to crash into the barrier, you’d expect it to prevent the vehicle from crossing to the other side.
But it didn’t do its job well yesterday.
2 Tower Transit Buses Collided in Bukit Batok Interchange
Two service 945 buses collided at Bukit Batok interchange yesterday evening (11 July), causing one to mount a kerb and fall on its side.
According to Bukit Batok MP Murali Pillai, one of the buses was entering the interchange while the other was pulling out. The impact caused one of the buses to mount a kerb and fall to its side, he said.
It smashed through the barrier and landed on the road below.
17 Injured, 5 Seriously Hurt
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for help at around 5.05pm.
When they arrived, they found a passenger bus lying on its side. 8 people were inside the bus while another 9 were found outside the fallen vehicle.
Rescuers entered the bus through its rear windscreen, which had shattered.
“The rescuers created an additional point of entry at the front of the bus by using an electrical saw to cut through the front windscreen,” SCDF said.
“Once inside, rescue equipment were used to cut several poles off so as to create space for the casualties to be rescued safely.”
Two people inside the bus were carried out on stretchers, while six were able to walk out on foot with guidance.
According to a witness, many were bleeding from their wounds.
In total, 17 people were injured, 5 of whom were seriously hurt, though none of the injuries was life-threatening.
8 were taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, four to National University Hospital and two to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The remaining three people had minor injuries and did not want to be taken to hospital.

The Tower Transit driver was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, while the SBST driver was taken to the National University Hospital. Both bus captains were in stable condition.
Tower Transit said that the driver of the bus that was not carrying passengers had been suspended pending investigation.
It added that it’s currently assisting with police investigations.
