Bukit Panjang LRT To Close Early Daily From Now Until 2024 For 4-Year Upgrade

Opened in 1999, Bukit Panjang LRT is the first light rail system to operate in Singapore.

For over twenty years, it has given a lot of people in the Bukit Panjang area easier access to the rest of Singapore.

But it comes with its own problems too.

Doors left open while in transit. Slamming shut with unsuspecting passengers between them.

Windows that misted at weird timings. The windows are supposed to mist over for privacy concerns because the trains travel close to HDB blocks on certain segments.

And the train rides are always jerky.

In fact, back in 2016, SMRT was thinking of scrapping the Bukit Panjang LRT system.

Well, if you feel the same way, you’ll be psyched to hear this:

Bukit Panjang LRT is Undergoing On A Major Overhaul

That’s right. After twenty-one years of operation, Bukit Panjang is going to under a major overhaul.

According to LTA, this is what you can expect from the upgrade:

New Signalling System

The new signalling system allows trains to run closer to each other. This will increase the frequency of trains and lower the waiting time.

It also gives the operator better capabilities for smoother, safer and more reliable rides.

Smart Sensors To Pre-empt Faults

Smart sensors and intelligent real-time condition monitoring will be put into place to detect faults early.

So that even if not caught in time, maintenance and repairs can be carried out fast.

New Power Rails System

And it’s not just preparing for faults. Stronger-built power rail brackets will be put into place for more dependable power delivery.

New Light Rail Vehicles (LRV)

They’ll put in 19 new LRVs that will make your ride more comfortable.

The new LRVs will be equipped with efficient Alternating Current (AC) propulsion motor for easier maintenance and a system to monitor conditions in real-time.

But There’s A Catch

From 13 Jan 2020 to 2024, the Bukit Panjang LRT will close early at 11.30pm. 

If you’re going home after 11.30pm, here are the late-night buses you can take instead:

• 920
• 922
• 973
• 974

Bus services will be extended until 1am.

Alternatively, the Downtown Line’s Bukit Panjang MRT station isn’t affected by the upgrade as well.

So if you’re staying in the Bukit Panjang area, be prepared to plan your trip wisely, eh?
