Mini-Bus With 13 Kids Crashed Into Multiple Vehicles; Nearby Cyclist Claimed He Used Emergency Exit to Rescue Kids

Do you remember taking the school bus when you were younger?

School buses are an easy way for students to get to and from school without bothering their busy parents.

However, are school buses really safe?

Earlier this week, an accident involved a bus carrying 13 pupils and multiple other vehicles.

The bus driver was allegedly not on the bus when the accident happened.

Here are the details about this incident.

Cyclist Says a School Bus With 13 Students Was Involved in an Accident

On 27 July 2023, a netizen made a post on the Facebook group Singapore Spokes about an accident that he was nearly involved in.

The cyclist said that he was “almost run over” by a school bus which had “13 primary [school] kids”.

He saw the bus “careening over a grass embankment” before hitting a “tree scaffold” and then hitting “four cars” on the street.

The bus then came to a stop.

During this ordeal, the cyclist saw “kids bouncing out of their seats”.

Even more shocking was that no driver was in sight on the bus.

The cyclist did, however, spot an “old man” who was “in the [middle] of the street” and assumed that he was the bus driver.

Surprisingly though, the bus driver appeared to have fallen out of the bus and was “100 yards away” (approximately 91 m) when the bus went out of control.

Cyclist Rescued Children Through the Bus’ Emergency Exit

The cyclist recounted how he threw his bike on the ground and ran over to “extract” the kids with the help of another bystander.

While the other good Samaritan herded the children out of the driver’s door, the cyclist “punched” the emergency exit at the back of the bus to get the children out from the broken glass panel.

He then called the bus company while others contacted emergency services.

More help and some ambulances eventually arrived, with the cyclist providing his statement to the police.

As to the identity of this heroic cyclist, Stomp identified him as Brian Drayton, the founder of the cycling community Singapore Spokes.

The police, responding to media questions, said that they knew about an accident involving a car, a van, a lorry and a minibus at about 3.45 pm on 26 July 2023, at 206 Rangoon Road.

Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
