Cabbie Who Online Shamed Lady Fired by ComfortDelGro

As I may have said in the past, the invention of the Internet (and social media) is a double-edged sword.

While it was made life truly easy and convenient for us all, it has also made complaining and shaming easy and convenient.

Nowadays, whenever there are any forms of conflict or displeasure, most people would use social media as their first weapon to shame them on the Internet.

Attempting to shame people using the jolly bunch of Internet keyboard warriors is a pretty despicable method of getting “justice”.

It’s essentially cyber-bullying. And that’s no trivial matter.

A ComfortDelGro taxi driver attempted this, and fortunately for once, the jolly bunch of Internet keyboard warriors actually turned against him.

Drunk Passenger Failed To Pay Taxi Fare

Apparently, after completing the trip for a drunk passenger, the taxi driver failed to get payment from her as she was too drunk.

Perhaps trying to use the method I stated above, he started recording the passenger in a video as he carried on his conversation.

He asked her repeatedly, “Do you want to pay the taxi fare?”

It was then clear that she intends on paying but wanted to find her bag for her wallet, which the taxi driver claims is not around.

Perhaps she misplaced her bag before boarding the taxi or she remembered wrongly, who knows? She was drunk.

But the taxi driver was not having any of it.

He proceeds to start shaming her in the video.

He starts to accuse her of “wasting everybody’s time” and keeps repeating “Look at her.” Then, he added: “Young, beautiful, but a brain full of water.

However, after sharing the video, most comments started to berate him for his actions.

Cue Backlash

While it is wrong of the passenger to get drunk and be unable to pay her fares, it is fair to say that the taxi driver took the completely wrong approach to this.

Taxi Driver Fired By ComfortDelGro

After this went viral and caught the attention of ComfortDelGro, the driver was promptly terminated by the company.

Ms Tammy Tan, Group Chief Corporate Communications Officer of ComfortDelGro said: “The way the cabby handled the incident is unacceptable and we have terminated his hiring contract.”

They are also in contact with the passenger to resolve this case.

She then also used this opportunity to “remind our cabbies who encounter drunk passengers and fare evaders to not take matters into their own hands”.

Instead, report them to the police or the company.
