Most whisky drinkers are familiar with the price tags of famous whisky such as Yamazaki (it just won an award!) and The Macallan. The prices of rare whisky are not something that normal people can afford. You probably cannot even get to taste it, let alone own a bottle. However, in Jan 2014, there is a whisky that was sold for a record bidding price of USD$628,205 in an auction house in Hong Kong. Your jaws dropping yet?
Allow us to introduce The Macallan M. This whisky is one of the rarest of its peers, and is housed in a beautiful crystal decanter. This particular ‘The Macallan M’ bottle that was sold for such a whooping big sum of money was the crème of the crop. It is housed in a faceted 6 litre crystal decanter that took 17 hand-blown glass craftsmen over 50 hours to create. The decanter was nicknamed “The Constantine”. There are only 4 such bottles in the world.
Let’s take a closer look at the water of life housed inside the decanter. The Macallan M was blended out of seven sherry oak casks chosen by the Master Whisky Maker, Mr Bob Dalgamo. The choice was made out of nearly 200,000 casks that sits inside The Macallan distillery in Scotland. The seven chosen casks share an age range from 25 years old to 75 years old. Mind you, The Macallan M is still a single malt whisky, because all the whisky blended in it is made from barley malt and not mixed with other “impurities”.
Why is The Macallan M so special in its own rights? This is because The Macallan M is one of the first few whisky to display no age statements. The owner of this bottle of The Macallan M literally owns one of the rarest whisky in the world due to its scarcity of both the liquid within and the decanter without. It has been called “a unique opportunity to own a collaboration between best-respected luxury brands.”
Keen buyers of The Macallan M can consider the smaller 1 litre bottle of The Macallan M, retailing around USD$4500. The local price of this bottle is SDG$8,025 and can only be bought at The Macallan events.
The whisky world is moving towards ageless bottles to increase its appeal to the Asian markets. While most whisky producers will still produce their aged collections, more and more of them are trying out ageless bottles to test the market. The Macallan has been one of the first few in the industry to try for the ageless bottles.
Their 1824 series find ageless whisky collaborating with luxury brands to make their decanter in an attempt to appeal to high-end drinkers. The most expensive whisky in this range is The Macallan M. The other lower range whisky are (in order of cost), The Macallan Rare Cask, The Macallan Reflection, The Macallan No. 6 and finally The Macallan M. These bottles are limited in quantities and are highly sought after by ‘The Macallan’ lovers.
With such beauty, how can this bottle ever be cheap? Us peasants can probably only own the picture of it.
