Do you think you have what it takes to be a Singaporean? A true-blue Singaporean that’s so Singaporean you can’t be any more Singaporean?
Well, let’s put it to the test. Literally.
There’s no official answer sheet for this 100% legitimate test, so I decided to make my own.
2017 SINGLISH EXAM ANSWER SHEET
- Eh
- Lah
- Hor
- Ah
- Meh
- Leh
- Lor
(Think I’m wrong? Comment what you think is correct down below!)
Some have even deemed this an official test!
These “lahs” lah, “lehs” lah or “lohs” lah are actually discourse particles. Yeah, you’ve read it right: there are people studying Singlish.
Whatever your result is, one thing’s for sure. Singaporeans sure are united when it comes to their own invented language!
And just so you know, Singlish isn’t a “broken” English: it’s just an English dialect that is unique to Singapore. In fact, it has a rather fancy name: Colloquial Singaporean English.
Just think of it this way: American English is a dialect, so is British English. Singlish isn’t “wrong” per se – it’s just different.
And it has its own set of grammatical rules. If not, why would there be correct answers for this test? #justsaying
