Upon renting a car and stumbling into a baker’s dozen of problems, a daughter left a negative review about the care rental experience. However, she never expected that her father would be pulled into a “blacklist”, which prevented him from renting cars from other companies.
In a fit of rage, the daughter reported it to the police.
The Inciting Incident
The beginning of their troubles began in June 2022.
The daughter Rashini, aged 20, was helping her father rent a car from a company at Geylang Road back then.
Her parents were going on a holiday in Malaysia soon. After her father retrieved the car, he noticed that the car was riddled with problems.
When Rashini reported it to the car company, they unexpectedly asked her parents to fork out the money for repairs.
Seeing that the other party was being unreasonable, Rashini stated that she would be leaving a negative review, but they just dismissed it.
Two months later, Rashini was renting another car for her father when she realised that her father had been pulled into a blacklist, and he could not rent cars from other companies.
After fishing around for answers, another car company told her that her father had been reported for not paying his car rental fees in 2020, and he had gotten into an accident while driving.
Hence, he was thrown into the blacklist.
However, Rashini is of the opinion that her father was pulled into the blacklist by the previous car company that he rented in June 2022.
“If my father was really put into the black list that year (2020), why did that company rent a car to my father this June?” Rashini said.

Rashini was ignored when she tried to obtain answers from that car company. Shin Min Daily News has tried to reach out to them as well, but there was no response.
Okay, now the car company is just being petty.
In order to reclaim her father’s innocence, Rashini has already reported this incident to the Consumer’s Association and the police.
The police have confirmed that they received a report.
The Myriad of Problems
The rented car from June had a whole host of problems.
The windows would not budge, the headlights were broken, and the car interiors were dirty and messy.
What fun. The car technically functions, but working conditions are terrible.
Rashini also mentioned that the car rental company advertised that the rental fee would cost $59 per day online, but she spent $535 to rent the car for five days in the end. On average, she was spending $107 every day.
However, since her parents needed the car urgently, she did not question it back then.
However, when they retrieved the car, her father discovered the vehicle was wrought with problems.
Reporting the issues was an exercise in futility; the car company even went as far as ignoring her messages.
Since the windows could not be raised or lowered, the process of going through the customs was quite troublesome for her father. Due to the broken headlights, her parents did not dare to drive around Malaysia at night.
Non-Intervention from Consumers’ Association
According to the Consumers’ Association, they cannot investigate the customer blacklist that the other companies employed.
Apparently, the Consumers’ Association replied to her report by email, stating that the association’s responsibility is to reconcile or mediate any problems between the consumers and business.
Therefore, the blacklist is outside of their jurisdiction.
A manager at a car rental company confirmed that a system for “blacklisted customers for car rentals” does exist. Their fellows from small car rental companies are allowed to add customers with bad records into the list.
This makes it more convenient for the car dealers to examine their customer’s history, since they have accumulated data to rely on.
But is it really reliable if these car companies can just fabricate excuses to pull any customers who annoys them into the blacklist…?
They might need to add a vetting process for this system, like supporting documents and whatnot.
If Rashini wants to pull her father out from the car rental blacklist, she needs to communicate with the previous car company and ask them to make a request to withdraw his name from the blacklist system.
Otherwise, he will be stuck in the blacklist for the foreseeable future.
Seriously, what is the point of having a review system if one is incapable of accepting criticism in a constructive manner and improving from it?
