For reasons you and I cannot fathom, some people out there enjoy abusing animals.
Some of them even do it because they think it’s “fun”.
Take this young punk, for instance.
Filmed Himself Abusing Cat
On Sunday (16 Aug), user Andrea Chan took to Facebook to condemn a fellow church member for abusing a stray cat.
Chan shared a video of the incident, as well as screenshots of a conversation with the man, who she says is a cell group leader from City Harvest Church (CHC).
In the video, a man on a bicycle can be seen intentionally riding over a cat’s tail before turning to the camera and laughing.
The cat quickly darts away and appears to have escaped unscathed, but Chan was appalled at the man’s behaviour.
“If this is your definition of fun, you really have issues”, Chan wrote.
Chan, who is a former CHC cell group member, says she left the man’s group because her fellow members condoned the abuse.
She claims that the man had also abused other cats in the past, and even joked about it later on.
“I was a cell member, hearing you joked in the past about how you’ve abused another cat by throwing something at it(not sure what item was it) to get rid of it, or even scaring the cat when it wasn’t doing anything to you.”
When confronted in a conversation on Instagram, the man said he was “playing only”.
Chan later added another photo which shows him joking about killing a large group of cats.
Inevitably, when there’s an online backlash against you, you can either choose to vanish from the face of the Earth and hope everyone forgets, or issue an apology.
The man chose the latter.
“Misguided Fun”
In a post on Facebook that was subsequently unavailable, the man, Julian Lee, said he felt “sorry and apologetic” for what he did, and claims it was borne out of “misguided fun”.
“I want to assure everyone that it was never my intention to hurt the cat in any way. It was done out of misguided fun. It took this incident to make me realise that my action was wrong, unkind and immature to begin with.”
Lee added that he was “deeply remorseful” for his actions and says he will not allow it to happen again.
Or at least not on camera, I’m guessing.
Lee also apologised to Chan for causing her distress and not taking her seriously when she confronted him about the abuse.
“This incident has made me realise that my action is unbecoming of me as a small group leader in my church and have caused stress and disappointment”.
“I humbly seek your forgiveness. Right now, I will continue to reflect on my own actions.”
AVS Looking Into Matter
In her post, Chan said she had reported the incident to both the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS).
Speaking to AsiaOne, the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) confirmed that they are investigating the matter.
“The AVS, a cluster of the National Parks Board (NParks), has been alerted to and is concerned to learn of the incident in which a man had allegedly tried to run over a cat with his bicycle,” said Jessica Kwok, the Group Director of AVS’ Community Animal Management.
”We are contacting relevant parties on this matter and are looking into the case.”
Those found guilty of animal abuse could be fined up to $15,000, jailed up to 18 months, or both, even if it’s their first offence.
So, even though this YP apologised, he may not get off so easily.
