We’ve waited for this moment for a long, long time.
The latest addition to Changi Airport Group’s bevy of beauties, the arguably most technologically advanced one so far.
Terminal 4 is opening soon!
And without further ado, here are 8 things you should know about Changi Airport Terminal 4’s impending opening!
1. Opening date
It will open on Oct 31, according to Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan.
Slightly less than three months from now? Sweet!
Too bad I have nowhere to go. Sadly.
2. It’s going to be fully ‘complete’
Construction had been completed on Dec 2016, but to make sure that it’s fully functional, they held more than 100 trials involving 2,500 airport staff and 1,500 volunteers.
There are a few checks and reviews left, which will be done in the final phase of preparations.
3. Airlines shift over
There will be nine airlines that operate from Terminal 4. Among them, Cathay Pacific and Korean Air will be the first to shift over once the Terminal opens on Oct 31.
The remaining seven airlines the AirAsia Group (four airlines), Cebu Pacific, Spring Airlines and Vietnam Airlines will move over during the period of Nov 2 to Nov 7.
4. Preparations for flight started even before construction was done
That’s right; preparations started as early as October 2016.
According to Changi Airport, “This began with tabletop exercises to develop the standard operating procedures, and later progressed to ground deployment exercises to familiarise staff with the new terminal and processes.”
Trials involving specific commercial flights at Terminal 4 have also been held in recent weeks, in order to iron out all system faults and uncover any further areas of improvement.
Looks like Changi Airport Group has been learning from SMRT’s mistakes, huh?
5. Price
The entire Terminal 4 took an estimated budget of S$985 million to build.
Which is a shocker to us commoners, but to Changi Airport Group it would probably be like…
6. Smallest kid in the Airport
With a capacity of about 16 million passengers, the two-storey T4 is the airport’s smallest Terminal. In fact, it’s half the size of Terminal 3.
With T4’s inclusion, the total capacity of the Airport will be boosted to 82 million passengers a year.
That’s a figure I can’t even begin to imagine. Can you picture 82 million passengers traversing the Airport in one year?
That’s like footsteps from all over the world!
And when you step on a footstep from Russia, can you say that you’ve walked Russia?
Hmm… gets you thinking.
7. Features
But of course, it’s not just the big ass planes taking off into the sky.
Terminal 4 will contain elements of local heritage and culture.
A heritage zone
Beautiful designs
A mini-theatre show in collaboration with composer Dick Lee, and orchid-inspired designs.
Heck, even the toilets in the Heritage zone have a certain British colonial design.
There will also be artworks and immersive walls.
As well as space and lots of greenery.
It looks so neat that I might just sneak there for a chilling session, even if I have no outgoing flights.
Oops, that’s illegal. Please don’t do it.
Or we might just be writing about you next.
8. Automation
Terminal 4 will be like Cyborg of Justice League. It’s chocked full of technological advancements.
Possessing not only the FAST system, the airport will also push out new technology in baggage handling, security, retail and housekeeping.
These sectors will engage 80 percent of all Changi Airport Staff.
Looks like Changi Airport has been upping their game, huh? Nothing less to be expected from one of the best Airports in the world. #Singaporepride
Thoughts
I might not be a frequent flyer, but even I’m excited about the opening. There’s just something about airports that just click with you, y’all know? EVEN if you’re not sitting on the plane.
And with such tempting features, it would surely attract quite a lot of sight-seers.
What about you? Are you excited about the opening of Terminal 4?
