Cheryl Chan, Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC, has announced that she will be retiring from politics after two terms.
The announcement was made earlier today (21 April 2025).
Chan, 48, cited her desire to spend more time with her family as the main reason for stepping down.

Something She Thought About for Some Time
Chan’s decision to retire was made after careful thought. She said, “It had been challenging since my father was ill in 2022. After his passing a year ago, I decided to give time to my family”.
She explained that her father fell ill in 2022. After his death a year ago, she decided to prioritise her family.
In her Facebook post, Chan thanked residents, volunteers, community partners, and donors for their support. She wrote, “Your care, love and support got me going in the toughest time. These shared moments and thoughts will always stay with me. Fengshan will always be home to me and have that special place in my heart”.
Chan’s departure leaves questions about who the PAP will field in East Coast GRC for the next election. The party has not announced its candidate line-up. The Workers’ Party is expected to contest the GRC again.
Chan is currently the group chief strategy and sustainability officer at ST Engineering. She is the seventh PAP MP to announce retirement ahead of the upcoming polls on 3 May 2025.
Political Career
Chan made her political debut in the 2015 General Election.
She contested in the newly-formed Fengshan Single Member Constituency, securing 57.5 per cent of the vote against the Workers’ Party’s Dennis Tan.

In 2020, Fengshan SMC was absorbed into East Coast GRC. Chan joined the five-member team that included Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, Dr Maliki Osman, Jessica Tan, and Tan Kiat How. The team won with 53.39 per cent of the vote.
Before entering politics, Chan volunteered in Fengshan for a decade. She supported Meet-the-People Sessions, assisted house visits, and served on several committees. Former transport minister Raymond Lim, then the MP for Fengshan, asked her to contest in the 2015 election. Chan said she was “stunned” by the request but saw it as an honour.
She has expressed that her journey in politics has taught her many life lessons and allowed her to give back to the community.
