A man who was trying to help two women in need near Tampines MRT station nearly lost hundreds of dollars in what appears to be part of a scam trend across Singapore.
The incident occurred on 22 April 2025 between 6:10pm and 6:20pm as the victim, identified only as Jason, was walking from Tampines Bus Interchange to fetch his daughter from childcare.
“Two middle-aged women, who looked like they were from China, approached me,” Jason told Stomp.

The women claimed that their “Alipay was blocked” and that they hadn’t eaten so they asked for some money to take the MRT and buy some food.
Initially hesitant, Jason was persuaded when the women insisted that they were not scammers and were “desperate” for money to get food.
They promised to return his money the next day when their Taiwanese friend was scheduled to arrive.
Jason gave them $30 for MRT fare to their supposed hotel in Woodlands and food.
The women then claimed they had been evicted from their hotel and asked to borrow $300 more. While walking to an ATM, they increased their request to $370, insisting they worked in the beauty industry in Hong Kong and would return the money the following day.
Jason’s wife, who arrived during the encounter, recorded the women on video. She noticed they were watching her husband intently while he was at the ATM.
By the time police reached the scene at approximately 6:30pm, the suspected scammers had already fled the area.
