Apparently, there’s such a thing as a “1,001 Car Things to do Before You Die” list and the death-defying “escaping from a car dangling off the edge” is one of them.
However, unlike the hosts, Jessi and Patrick that experienced in a relatively safe simulated setting in their automotive show, The List, the three people who experienced it off the cliff along Clementi Road would rather have not experienced it in the first place.
Needless to say, it’s no picnic.
Like a scene out of Fast & Furious
At around 11:21am on Apr 28, a red sedan that’s moving along Clementi Road suddenly lost control and swerved to the left.
It rammed open the metal fence of a nearby garden; a metal fence that’s supposed to prevent anything or anyone from falling 6 meters to the busy road below.
Thankfully, the car didn’t drive off the cliff like some stunt scene in a Fast & Furious movie but it ended up precariously suspended on the edge of a 6-meter-high concrete wall with all 3 presumably shell-shocked people still seated within.
Thank goodness for seat belts – a great reminder to be sure to wear your seat belts, folks!
A Herculean rescue
When the incident happened, a 43-year-old gardener heard a loud bang and saw the car ramming into the fence.
He immediately informed his supervisor Jeremy (加耶米) who then promptly rallied 4 workers to help rescue the people in the car.
With Herculean effort, they pushed down on the car boot to prevent the car from slipping further towards the edge of the cliff.
Some good Samaritans nearby helped to open the car doors, allowing the two passengers and driver to escape the car safely.
A witness, 68-year-old retiree, Huang XunWei (黄循伟) reported the incident to ShinMin Daily News (新明日报).
When the reporter arrived at the scene, there were already two police offers there and that the area around the incident had been cordoned off, including the left lane on Clementi Road.
They were trying to haul the car off the edge of the cliff and by around 1 pm, they have successfully done so.
During the interview with the reporter, the police reported that no one was hurt in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
