Last week, my colleague wrote an article about A&W’s comeback in 2017, with a goal of 25 international stores.
Hashtags of #comebacktosganw started to emerge (okay, I exaggerate: there’s just one), but everyone was rooting for it to come back, hoping that 1 of the 25 stores will be in Singapore.
Well, uncles and aunties, your prayers have been heard: A&W has confirmed that they’ll be coming back to Singapore.
Specifically, in 2018 instead of 2017.
In a Yahoo! article that first broke the news which sent every 90s kid to ecstasy, A&W CEO Kevin Bazner said that they are “on track to open 30 to 40 new restaurants a year between these four countries.”
The four countries are Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and—drum rolls—Singapore.
In fact, A&W has apparently set up an office in Singapore last year (2016) to prepare for this expansion.
Here’s a recap on our previous article: A&W hasn’t been doing well in the last ten years, and it was only in February 2017 that they started to grow again.
They’ve begun to focus more on the quality of their products, and even are looking at the concept of cook to order (which I personally won’t like because fast food should be fast, no?)
The change in direction led to an increase of 28% in revenue for standalone A&W stores, therefore prompting the expansion.
Here’s A&W’s goal for Southeast Asia, according to Mr Bazner: “Once the first location is open, we will begin actively franchising with a goal of opening our first franchise restaurant towards the back half of 2018.”
They’re now looking for a “real estate for a flagship company restaurant in Singapore.”
Mr Bazner, if you’re reading this, we at Goody Feed promise that we’ll have A&W at least once a week if you’d open it somewhere near Bukit Batok Crescent. And we promise we won’t order Burger King again.
