When COVID-19 struck, the lives of many Malaysians and Singaporeans who commuted between the two countries daily were deeply affected.

After all, land borders were no longer open and Malaysians can no longer come into Singapore to work or study.

However, it seems like those awful days might be over soon.

First Phase Of Reopening Land Borders

Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Hishammuddin Hussein talked to reporters yesterday and said that both Singapore and Malaysia are very excited to reopen the borders to about 200,000 daily commuters.

But of course, this is dependent on what the situation is like during the first phase of reopening currently reserved for people travelling for business and work pass holders.

It was officially reported on 14 July that land borders would slowly start opening on 10 August and will allow the first group of commuters – those travelling for official business purposes and those who are long-term work pass holders – through first.

So if you are someone who belongs to the group above and you plan to cross the border from 10 August onwards, you need to take note of the following.

You would have to:

  • submit documents, including your itinerary, to the Foreign Affairs Ministry;
  • and undergo swab tests before you can enter either country.

Second Phase Of Reopening Borders

He then said, “The next stage of the border reopening refers to daily commuting of Malaysians and Singaporeans, back and forth between the two countries.”

So this means that if everything goes well, daily commute might become possible again.

So when exactly is the next stage of the border reopening going to be?

Well, as of now, there is no confirmed date of when the borders will open to the remaining 200,000 daily commuters.

But rest assured that it should be soon. So continue praying and hoping that everything goes well during the first phase.
