Some questions have no answers.
What comes first: chicken or eggs? Why are you still so tired after sleeping for 10 hours daily? What’s the real use of our nails?
And most importantly: is Daiso considered an essential service during this Circuit Breaker period?
Well, initially, it seems like Daiso is considered an essential service when they received permission to remain open for five outlets:
- IMM
- Waterway Point
- Plaza Singapura
- Square 2 (Novena)
- Tiong Bahru Plaza
Operating hours would change, though; instead of closing when the malls are closing, they’d close earlier at 7pm instead.
They had posted the announcement on their Instagram initially, but you won’t be able to find that post anymore.
Because the $2 shop has just made a U-turn.
Closing All Outlets Instead
After their initial announcement, some people weren’t happy, for the definition of “essential” here is very loose.
A few people have commented that while some of their items are considered essential, it’d lead to people finding excuses to head down to the outlets and creating a cluster.
So instead of sticking to their gun, a few hours after they announced their planned reopening, they posted this:
Lest you can’t read, here’s what they’ve written:
Dear Customers,
We sincerely apologise for the opening notice that we displayed earlier in our social media mentioning that some of our stores are open throughout the Circuit Breaker period. The shops were opened earlier but all stores are now closed. In the short period of time it has garnered mixed responses both from public and entities, we understand that this is a critical period for Singapore and will comply with the measures.
The management has since retracted the notice and confirmed that ALL DAISO and THREEPPY Stores will be closed throughout this period, starting from 7 April to 4 May 2020 or until further notice.
We regret the inconvenience caused for every party and would like to thank you for your understanding and continued support.
Yes, they’ve reversed their decision after “mixed responses” from both public and entities.
In other words, if you’ve read news articles about Daiso’s planned opening, please do not head down to the outlets because you’d be disappointed.
If you’re like me who’s telecommuting and have forgotten to bring a pen home from your office, then I feel you.
