Former WP NCMP Thinks Raeesah Khan Shouldn’t Resign & Continue to Serve Quietly

Ever since Worker’s Party MP Raeesah Khan dropped the bombshell that she had lied several times in Parliament, some netizens have been calling for her resignation.

Khan had earlier shared an anecdote about accompanying a rape survivor to a police station where the officer had made some troubling comments about the victim’s dressing and drinking.

Despite being questioned about the anecdote several times by other MPs, Khan stuck to her story and kept shtum about the details, citing confidentiality.

However, she recently revealed that she had not accompanied the rape survivor and that she had simply relayed the anecdote which she heard in a women’s support group.

She has since been referred to the Committee of Privileges and could face a fine or even jail time.

However, one WP member thinks Khan shouldn’t give in to the public’s outcry.

Former WP NCMP Thinks Raeesah Khan Shouldn’t Resign & Continue to Serve Quietly

Khan should not resign but should instead take responsibility for her transgression and serve quietly, said former WP Non-Constituency MP Daniel Goh.

Offering his thoughts on the issue in a Facebook post, Associate Professor Goh said that Khan’s revelation has affected him badly.

“It has shaken my trust in the party, to which I gave almost ten good years to help build up, and to which I still belong as a cadre member. I can’t believe that a WP MP blatantly lied multiple times in Parliament,” he said.

As damaging as the whole debacle is to the credibility of the party as well as the issue which Khan spoke in support of – the empowerment of women – Associate Professor Goh thinks Khan should not step down from her post.

“She needs to take responsibility for this grave transgression and resigning will be too easy and walking away from that responsibility,” he wrote.

“I believe she should serve out her elected term going 100% into serving communities, families and individuals QUIETLY, no social media posting or posturing, so that the focus is on those she served and not herself.

“We need to reclaim this spirit of service from the narcissistic vanities of the social media age,” he added.

Associate Professor Goh believes that her resignation would eventually lead to WP losing votes in the elections, which comes from the “same political expediency of chasing votes that gave rise to her transgression.”

WP Forms Disciplinary Panel to Look into Matter

As Associate Professor Goh noted, the WP has formed a disciplinary panel to look into the conduct of MP Raeesah Khan. It comprises secretary-general Pritam Singh, chair Sylvia Lim, and vice-chair Faisal Manap.

“The panel will report its findings and recommendations to the central executive committee after it completes its work,” a WP spokesman said.

Associate Professor Goh believes the WP’s leadership must take some responsibility as well for Khan’s behaviour.

“The statement was not made on impulse. In my experience, speeches were shared and reviewed among MPs and we might disagree and debate, but we would make corrections or drop things entirely according to the collective consensus,” he said.

“I hope the disciplinary panel made up of the top three leaders will recognise their responsibility IN this matter and accountability to the public ON this matter.”
