Alleged Debtor Filmed Attacking Debt Collectors & Police Had to be Involved

Despite the tales our uncles tell us, not all debt collectors go around throwing raw eggs at people’s front gates.

Raw eggs aren’t free, after all. 

No, sharp objects aren’t always brandished, vulgar words aren’t always flung, and ingredients used to make banana cake are rarely necessary.

Instead, legal debt collectors just go up to people’s houses and remind them that they have a debt to pay to a certain entity.

In this situation, we’d typically have two options if we didn’t have the money:

1. Play a series of Korean children’s games and try to stay alive
2. Say we will pay it up later

One woman took secret option number 3, however, and allegedly attacked her alleged debt collectors.

A video of a woman attacking her alleged debt collectors is making the rounds on social media.

Footage of the incident seems to have been shared on Facebook by the company responsible for the debt collection.

The 11-minute video begins with a woman and a man – who appears to be her husband – attempting to drive away two debt collectors. The altercation occurs outside the woman’s house.

In the video, the woman can be seen striking the man’s phone and his hand as he recorded her, telling him to “take away” the phone.

The debt collector then threatens to take the woman to court: “You hit me, I will just sue you!”

The woman, clearly furious, has to be calmed by her husband.

The husband and wife accuse the debt collectors of harassment, saying they don’t owe “a single cent”, but this is disputed by the debt collector, who says they have proof that the couple owes their client.

“I hope your children can stand with your head raised up”, the husband said.

“You owe this amount, you pay this amount. Simple,” the debt collector said.

To this, the woman responds “Give me a lawyer’s letter if I owe”. She repeatedly asks for evidence throughout the video.

When one debt collector pulls out a stack of documents purportedly proving their indebtedness, the woman asserts that it’s not strong enough evidence, and that a lawyer’s letter is required.

At one point, the woman calls the police to report a case of harassment outside her house.

After going back and forth on this issue for several more minutes, the woman starts chasing the men away, resorting to pushing them when they refuse to go.

A neighbour who overhears the commotion then attempts to intervene, but to no avail.

Police Officers Called in

The company later shared pictures of them speaking to officers, along with a case card for a report that was presumably lodged over the incident.

According to the case card, a report over “criminal force” was made, and was serious enough to warrant further investigations.

Contrary to what some of us believe, debt collecting is not illegal in Singapore. However, if you owe money and your debt collector resorts to one of the following, you can file a police report as it’s against the law:

• threatening or intimidating you
• inflicting injury
• vandalism
• unlawful stalking
• unlawful assembly – group of five or more
