6 People & a Deceased Person Were Trapped in a Jurong West HDB Flat Lift for 50 Minutes

While technology has definitely become more advanced over the years, it’s evident that it may still fail us from time to time.

On Tuesday (4 October), a group of six people who were in the process of sending off a deceased person ended up being trapped in a lift of a Housing Development Board (HDB) flat.

Here’s what happened.

Group Stuck in Lift for 50 Minutes

Just yesterday (5 October), Facebook user Keine Brutalitàt shared more about the unlucky incident that occurred at Block 760 Jurong West Street 74 the day before.

Based on the Facebook post, a total of seven people were trapped in the lift — six living and one deceased.

Additionally, the group ended up being trapped for around 50 minutes.

“Five lift [technicians] and a team from the SCDF were called,” Brutalitàt added.

Photos of the incident, including one of the group of men carrying the deceased before heading into the lift, were attached in the post as well.

Those Around Tried to Open Lift Door and Provide Ventilation

Apart from that, the post revealed that the friends and relatives of the group attempted to pry the lift door open and managed to do so with the help of an umbrella.

A photo of one of the trapped men holding an umbrella between the lift doors was also shown.

According to Brutalitàt, there were also two people outside the lift who tried to fan some air into the lift through the small gap between the lift doors in order to ensure ventilation for those trapped inside the lift.

SCDF Eventually Managed to Free Group

Other than that, the Facebook post also included two photos of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel trying to free the group by prying the lift doors open from outside the lift on the ground floor.

At that point in time, it seemed like the lift was stuck between two different storeys. It was shut down as well.

A man in black, presumably a lift technician, was also photographed trying to use a key to “unlock” the lift door from outside the lift.

SCDF later confirmed with Mothership that they received a call for assistance at around 2.05pm on the day of the incident.

Although one person was found to have sustained minor injuries, that person declined to be sent to hospital.

Lift Apparently Malfunctions Often

Based on the post, this particular lift also appears to be far from efficient, with Brutalitàt claiming that residents in the area said that similar incidents with the same lift happened “quite frequently”.

It was also shared that the lift would indicate that it had been overloaded if there were more than three people in the lift.

A commenter on Facebook also shared that they heard from a resident about the lift issues, and that several complaints have been filed with the Residents’ Committee (RC) and the area’s Member of Parliament (MP) in the past.
