After a six-week trial, the verdict is out: Amber Heard did defame her ex-husband Johnny Depp, awarding Depp US$15 million in damages.
A Virginia seven-person jury on 1 June also ruled in favour of Heard in some aspects of her counter-suit against Depp, awarding her US$2 million in damages.
In case you aren’t caught up with the finer details of the case, Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife, Amber Heard, for defamation and asking for $50 million in damages for the opinion piece she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018 which alleges that he is a domestic abuser.
In response, Heard counter-sued Depp for $100 million for alleging that she was a liar.
Here are their responses to the verdict.
Depp: “Truth Never Perishes”
58-year-old Depp has denied abusing Heard or any other woman, and insisted that she was the one who abused him instead.
Watching the verdict from Britain, Depp said that the jury gave him his life back and that a new chapter has finally begun.
Here, he’s referring to how Heard’s domestic abuse allegations caused his long-standing acting career to plummet drastically.
He was originally approached for the writing and production of another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, a much beloved and popular franchise where he plays the unhinged Captain Jack Sparrow, but he was kicked off the project by Warner Bros.
Depp played as Grindelwald in the first two movies of Fantastic Beasts, a spin-off from the Harry Potter universe, but he was summarily replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.
His statement ended off with the Latin phrase “Veritas numquam perit. Truth never perishes.”
Heard: A “Setback” for Other Women
Heard stated that the disappointment she felt was “beyond words”.
“I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence and sway of my ex-husband,” she posted in a statement on social media.
She emphasized that she’s disappointed with what this verdict means for other women, labeling it a “setback” to the progress women has made in speaking up about domestic abuse.

Although the petition was created in 2020, it saw a huge surge in signatories ever since the defamation trial started in April.
According to netizens, since her allegations ruined “everything” for him, from his career to his children’s perception of him, then she should share the same fate.
