Doctor Personally Sucks 700ml Of Urine Out Of Man’s Bladder Onboard Plane To Save Him

There is no doubt that doctors save lives. It is part of their profession to cure or save patients whenever needed.

However, when a critical situation arises, it takes more than just a profession to save lives. It takes courage, quick thinking and selflessness to tackle the crises.

This particular doctor went above and beyond his duty as a doctor to save lives, and we think that he exemplified the qualities of what it takes to be a hero.

Doctor Saved A Life During Flight

According to Chinese media Hubei News, a director of Interventional Vascular Surgery at Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Hospital, named Zhang Hong was on a flight from Guangzhou to New York on November 19 when he saved a man’s life heroically.

A 70 years old elderly man was having trouble peeing on a flight, hence a cabin announcement was made urgently to seek medical assistance for the elderly man.

Crew members then took blankets and pillows from the crew lounge to make a temporary ambulance bed on the floor for him to lie down on.

Zhang then responded to the announcement, along with another doctor named Xiao Zhanxiang, a vascular surgeon from the People’s Hospital of Hainan Province.

One Litre Of Urine Discovered 

Upon examination, the two doctors discovered that there was almost one litre of urine in the unidentified elderly man’s bladder, that was to be urgently removed due to the risk of bladder rupture.

The doctors then jumped into action, using emergency medical equipment on board to save the elderly man. Xiao used the catheter on the portable oxygen cylinder mask, the syringe needle, a bottled milk straw and tape to make a puncture-and-urine-absorption device.

Xiao wanted to drain out the elderly man’s urine using the device. However, due to limited space in the cabin and the difference in pressure, the urine was unable to automatically drain out. Furthermore, there was too much urine for the device to be working properly.

Imagine yourself in this situation where a patient’s life is at stake and your device is not working, what would you do? Are you willing to do anything to save your patient?

Anything, including sucking urine out of the man’s bladder? Well, that’s what Zhang did. His quick thinking and dedication to saving this man meant that he did not hesitate in doing so.

Zhang then repeatedly sucked the urine out using his mouth for the next half an hour or so. This allows him to control the speed and intensity of urine discharge. On the other hand, the cabin crew measured the amount of urine collected to help Zhang and Xiao monitor the patient’s condition.

After sucking around 700 to 800 ml of urine, the patient’s condition progressively eased and stabilised until the plane landed five hours later.

“I Was Just Doing My Job”

After the incident, Zhang was interviewed by numerous media regarding his heroic act. He had been a doctor for 30 years, and said that he did what he had to do in a critical situation.

According to YCWB news, Zhang said that “At that time, I could only think about how to suck the urine out. Actually I already felt nauseous on my second mouthful. It was definitely unpleasant.”

It is unpleasant just typing it, I can’t even imagine how sucking it would have felt like. Kudos to Zhang for being really selfless and putting the interest of his patient over his own comfort.

“As a doctor, your job is to cure the sick. I was just doing my job.” Zhang told the media.
