Don’t Say Bojio: MapleStory Hiring to Complete Your Childhood Memories

MapleStory was the “it” game back in the early 00’s; even Teenage Magazine would offer CDs for us to download the game.

There were four characters to choose from—Warrior, Archer, Magician, and Thief.

Apparently now there is also a Pirate character.

I think it’s about time I revisit the game.

Talking about it brings back so many memories.

I would rush back from school just to play the game, I won’t leave my desktop till my mum starts nagging at me. (and yes, I would have my lunch and dinner at my desktop).

June holidays, I would meet my friends virtually.

In hindsight, I wished my mum was more strict towards me.

Oh wells, I turned out pretty alright.

Anyways…

If you ever envisioned yourself working for MapleStory, well, that could be a legit possibility.

Sounds like every 90s kids’ dream…

I mean it does, but their requirements…well, it is very lengthy, to say the least.

This is the caption attached to the job posting:

Hi all,

We have a vacancy open for a Product Specialist at our Singapore office. You will be working alongside Venshi and the other specialists on the Maple team, under my care. Instead of painting a pretty picture with fluff, here’s what you will actually be doing, on a daily basis :

  • Be actively involved in brainstorming for events and activities.
  • Be responsible for actualization of an idea right up to the execution and reporting of a project, with directions from management.
  • Propose strategic ideas in increasing player-base and revenue (not just ideas, but also a full working paper on targets, pros/cons and measurement of key metrics).
  • Constantly researching and monitoring consumer/industry trends and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Liaising and coordinating with internal departments such as Customer Service, Game Master, Marketing.
  • Provide the team with daily/weekly/impromptu status updates, data analysis or reports on issues, mostly for my use in meetings.

Life is not just sweet-smelling roses. From time-to-time, there will be crunches that will cause you to put in extra hours and have less phone/toilet breaks or sacrifice lunch or even sleep time, especially when there are urgent matters to attend to, such as server emergencies or one of those dreaded DDoS attacks.

The perfect candidate will possess all of the below requirements :

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (mostly so that we do not misunderstand you, or have to vet through your reports/write-ups for grammatical errors and spend precious time making changes and corrections). Creative and Marketing teams will always ask for content write-ups, and you will also be helping in creating webnews and notices. Sometimes Venshi will ask for help in composing his posts as well.
  • A passion for gaming in general, as the role needs you to be aware of the industry trends. Playing a number of games from different genres to understand more about the gaming industry helps a alot.
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills i.e. able to use data at hand to justify or support a statement and offer a fresh perspective in resolving matters.
  • Highly organized with very strong attention to details – the team says I’m demanding and OCD, and because it gets hectic here at times, I really do need you to have everything at your fingertips.
  • Familiar with Excel and Powerpoint (you will be doing a lot of VLookups and proposal slides/briefs).
  • Not afraid of figures, lots of it. Spreadsheets, graphs and charts will be your BFFs during your employment here.
  • Well-acquainted with all MapleStory services, at least for the past 3 years of content updates.
  • Basic to intermediate PC/Network troubleshooting background.
  • A good-natured, open-minded and candid team-player, who is able to handle stress and doesn’t emo all the way. We love being around positive people! We all work with each other to reach common targets and goals, and are very frank in our expressions. If you’re easily offended (people say xiaoqi) or find it difficult to take criticism (both internally, and from MSEA players), you might not be happy in this role.

Benefits :

  • Weird and funny colleagues to work and laugh with, a lot of food lovers (look at my size la!)
  • Freedom to wear sneakers, jeans, even your moth-eaten tee-shirt to work (as long as you showered and smell nice)
  • No hard rules about lunch time (no one leaves their desk during maintenance, but you can ask others to dabao)
  • You get to play MapleStorySEA during office hours (actually because you’re forced to test something)
  • Freebies when there are company events (no need to RSVP or queue with everyone else to get your hands on merch)
  • Occasional shared GRAB ride if you live in Tampines!

Up for the challenge? Say yes, please!

Well looking at the job scope, it does look like a very demanding job but hey, their perks are pretty good too such as playing the game during office hours, no strict dress codes and lots of freebies from their company events.

With any jobs, there is bound to be pros and cons. That’s just how life works.
But if passion is an important factor in whatever you do, then it should outweigh the cons.

At the end of the day, you can’t put a price on your job satisfaction.
