Korean actress Song Hye Kyo might be publicly known for many things, such as her beauty, acting capabilities and perhaps her recent marriage to Korean heartthrob Song Joong-Ki.
Meanwhile Song Joong Ki fangirls be like:
Well too bad b*tches. Just keep crying and weeping in your god-forsaken dark hellhole forever.
(Sorry, been influenced a bit too much by my colleague)
Anyways, it looks like Song Hye Kyo might just add another quality to her already over-achieving resume:
Being a diplomat.
And not in reel life either.
In real life.
The Dips- Deets- D- Deeties
Song was part of a business and cultural entourage assembled by President Moon Jae-in for the special Korea-China Economic and Trade Partnership Trip.
She was just one of a group of many Korean artists, who were blocked from China’s TV networks after the world’s second largest economy retaliated at Seoul’s deployment of THAAD, the US anti-missile system, last year.
Incidentally, the decision to obstruct K-Pop records and videos, as well as dramas and movies, struck the Korean entertainment industry real hard.
Measures
Relations obviously had to improve, and what better than the all-powerful Korean Hallyu wave to weave some intricacies here and there?
After all, over the past decade, the Korean wave hasn’t just become a global sensation; it has also become a cultural phenomenon and the driving force behind the country’s soft image.
“It is the confidence of South Koreans and business leaders that the difficult situation between the two countries, will be shaken off, and a new age of bilateral relations will begin,” President Moon told a round table of Chinese and South Korean business leaders.
In other words, he wishes to absolve the year-long diplomatic standoff and resume normal relations.
So where does Song come in?
Song’s role was pretty simple: to play the role of a cultural ambassador between the two countries.
And that, she did. In true Dr Kang style, she attended a state dinner hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing last night (14 Dec), and stole the spotlight.
But she wasn’t the only one.
Joining alongside her was South Korean volleyball queen Kim Yeon-koung, who now plys her trade in Shanghai.
The delegation was 220-strong, and included senior executives from Samsung, SK and Hanwha Group.
Looks like President Moon wasn’t kidding back there.
Things are looking up
Tour groups from South Korea have already started to return to China but there are still barriers to overcome. For one, Beijing has instructed travel agencies not to include Lotte Group, which “provided the land for the US-backed anti-missile system complex, in their tour packages”.
So yeah, still a bit touchy there.
But I’m sure the end goal will be met.
After all, they’ve got Dr Kang as a diplomat!
Albeit unofficial (for now).
