Douyin Bans Barbie Hsu’s Ex-Husband & Ex-Mother-in-Law for Disseminating False Information about Barbie Hsu

While Barbie Hsu’s death has been mourned by many, some are apparently still unable to let go of the grudges held with the deceased.

On 5 February 2025, less than a week after Barbie’s passing was confirmed, an influencer Xiao Jian under the account “I am Xia Xiao Jian” conducted a livestream, in which he allegedly claimed that the flight on which Barbie’s ashes were flown back to Taiwan were paid for by Wang Xiao Fei, her ex-husband.

The divorce between Barbie and Xiao Fei was a messy one–the two were still amidst post-divorce disputes when Barbie had passed away.

Netizens observed that the video uploaded by Xiao Jian with that false information was liked by Zhang Lan, Wang Xiao Fei’s mother and Barbie’s ex mother-in-law.

The content spreading such misinformation gained much traction. The accounts involved received much attention and additional followers as well as a result.

During this rare instance where netizens placed their investigative skills to good use, netizens claimed to have discovered that Xiao Jian was in fact Zhang Lan’s godson.

However, Zhang Lan denied those claims during an interview online with Ifeng Finance.

In light of this, Dee Hsu issued an official statement through her manager that this was not true at all, clarifying that “the flight and all other arrangements were settles by the Hsu family”.

Indeed, flight charter company Jetbay quashed all rumours when they publicly confirmed that the cost of the chartered flight transporting Barbie Hsu’s ashes was signed off by Dee Hsu’s company.

Douyin’s Response

A statement was published by “Douyin Security Centre” stating that the accounts involved have been “banned indefinitely”. These accounts include “I am Xia Xiao Jian”, two accounts with Zhang Lan’s name, presumably directly associated with her, and Wang Xiao Fei’s account.

It stated that this was because these accounts had promoted misinformation “to obtain commercial benefits”, and did not make any attempts to correct their mistake.

The statement denounced their spreading of rumours for “violating public order, being unethical, failing to show respect for the deceased and her family, and hurting the public sentiment”.

Douyin also mentioned in the statement that it will “continue to double down on any immoral content”, so as to “maintain a respectful online community”.

They implored netizens to to work together with them in doing this, by “reporting any accounts that uploaded such content”.

Netizens have praised Douyin for their swift and strict crackdown on the accounts spreading misinformation.

In addition, Sina Weibo also announced on 8 February 2025 that the live broadcasting function on Zhang Lan’s account has been suspended.
