If you’ve served in the Singapore Army, chances are, you’d have gone looking for durians once or twice during outfield.
Now, if the risk of getting caught and having to sign extra doesn’t put you off, here’s another reason why you shouldn’t do it.
You Might Get Hurt
Here’s some quick math:
An average durian weighs 1.5kg. According to science, the acceleration when an object drops to the ground is 10m/s (~9.8m/s).
And that’s not taking into account the thorny nature of durians.
So when a durian drops onto your head? Something’s got to give and highly likely, it’s your head.
In other words, a painful lesson, as this mother-son duo from Jengka, Pahang, had learnt.
Durian Dropped On Mother-Son Duo
On 31 July 2019, the mother, Norfarahan Bahruddin, was carrying her four-month-old son, Megat Muhammad Kays, when a durian fell on them.
It hit her son first, bouncing off his head and onto her chest before falling to the ground.
The pair were immediately rushed to Jengka Hospital for treatment.
Thankfully, There Were No Casualties
Megat Zarulfais Megat Kamaruddin, the father told reporters that his son has been discharged and is as energetic as ever.
He added that his wife’s injuries were more serious as her chest has gotten bruises from the thorny spikes of the fruit.
“If it fell directly on top of my son’s head, he might have suffered an even worse injury than this.”
She Did Not Go Searching For Durians
As per usual, netizens jumped to conclusion and reportedly blamed the wife for bringing the kid to go durian-hunting.
Megat Zarulfais clarified that his wife did not bring his son to go look for durians. It was just an accident when the durian dropped from the tree beside their house.
His wife had heard the durian bouncing off the tree branches and try to run away from the dropzone.

For those who believed and spread rumours about the wife, he only had this to say:
“For those who don’t know the true story, don’t make your own assumptions.”
Durians Typically Drop At Night
Now, if you’re the savvy 4G trooper that our government hope you’ll be, you’re probably searching on the internet to see the timing durians will drop.
It’s at night.
Before you cheer and decide to go durian hunting in the morning, just note that 80% of durians drop at night and 20% of durians might drop in the day.

But one thing for sure: make sure your helmet’s always on.
