TVB Host Draws Flak For Eating Bat Meat & Drinking Bat Soup; TV Station Has Since Responded

As the COVID-19 rages on in all of its unbridled fury, attention has turned to three primary aspects of the potent virus:

• The cure to it
• What the virus entails
• The origination of the pandemic

While the first two are undeniably important to the cause, I would like to focus on the third one:

The cause of this damn epidemic.

According to several studies, it’s believed that the virus actually originated from bats. And though it’s not a 100% confirmed notion, the speculation has led to many people campaigning for a ban on the sale of wild game ‘food’.

So really, one can understand if people tend to get a little… sensitive when it comes to bats. After all, bats are supposed to be a lot of things:

Dracula, ‘creators’ of COVID-19, Dracula, recession-inducers and more Dracula.

“What has Dracula got to do with any of this?” asked Reader Sohai.

Well, he’s kinda lethal too.

According to 8World, Hong Kong TV station TVB has come under fire for a variety show which purportedly featured the consumption of bat ‘delicacies’.

The controversial episode reportedly aired on 10 June.

Titled《溢游未尽》, the program is hosted by Taiwan host Liao Keyi, and features his many travels to scenic and iconic places alike.

And in one particular episode, one such trip entailed a visit to Palau, where Liao encountered bats in close proximity in front of the camera.

Which would have been entirely fine and all, had the host not proceeded to consume bat soup and meat on the small screen. 

Suffice it to say; complaints proved aplenty.

After the episode was aired, viewers began slamming the TV station for supposedly ignoring social public responsibilities and distributing the wrong message and information.

Filmed In 2017

As it turns out, the episode was filmed in 2017, and already made its run in Taiwan. The host reportedly went to Palau for an outdoor scene, where he sampled local flavoured dishes.

But the damage was done, and AsiaTourism has since responded.

According to them, Hong Kong’s acquisition of the broadcasting rights (to the show) may not have taken the changes in the epidemic into account, which resulted in a strong response.

The media of various countries have thus been requested to cease the broadcast of such affiliated content. AsiaTravel, too, professed that it will not air the episode anymore.

Well, let’s just say that there’s always a time and place to watch people eat bat meat on TV.

This period, lest you’re unaware, does not exactly qualify as a top contender for that.

Just drink soup. Nothing will go wrong with-
