Imagine this: You’re sitting in your room, getting ready for bed when what sounds like an explosion came from your bathroom.

Cautiously, you opened the toilet door, only to see your bathroom glass door shattered and pieces of glass on the ground.

That was exactly what happened to this netizen who stays at eCo condominium.

According to the video that was sent in by the tenant, Joshua, the glass door was visibly shattered.

Pieces of glass could be seen lying around on the ground too.

Thankfully, the tenant said, he wasn’t taking a shower at that time or he would probably be injured horrifically.

Condominium Has Responded

It was added that the management of eCo condominium has responded to the incident.

Within the same day, they got their people down to the scene to clear up the place and conducted an investigation as well.

They added that they’ve also assisted in helping to resolve the issue.

Not the First Time in the Condo

Well, turns out that this isn’t the first time such an incident has happened at the same condominium.

On 17 Feb 2019, a family living in a unit on the same condo witnessed their kitchen tempered glass door shatter right in front of their eyes.

During that incident, the management of eCo condominium said that all tempered glass used in the property adheres to the “requirements and standards of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA)”.

Why Do Tempered Glass Shatter

In Jan 2020, IKEA had to apologise to a customer after her two-year-old glass cabinet cracked for no reason.

Here’s what IKEA said about the case then:

“Tempered glass is used in the FABRIKOR glass cabinets and most other glass household products because it does not break into uneven shards.

“However, nicks and scratches could compromise the glass and those nicks may eventually lead the tempered glass to shatter unexpectedly into small pieces. (As it did in this case.)”

According to The Straits Times, such issues aren’t common and tempered glass is the only material that shatters “spontaneously” (read: by itself).

Apparently, while tempered glass is four times stronger than regular glass, the glass tempering process increases surface stress.

When combined with nickel sulphide inclusions during the manufacturing process, tempered glass can shatter by itself months or even, years, later.

On the flip side, it’s said that the glass pieces from a tempered glass when it shatters are more rounded compared to regularly glass, which helps to prevent injuries.

Not that it’ll be much consolation if it implodes while you’re showering, though.
