We must never let a good deed go unrecognized, but a 15-year-old student from Outram Secondary School got more than he expected when he, in his own words, “just wanted to help this elderly man” whom was lost.

And mind you, he didn’t even expect to be praised for helping the old man.

“I was doing what I can to help him.”

After that dangerous Tik Tok-dancing stint on the road, I’ve got to say “Faith in the youth of Singapore restored”!

A timely encounter and a story revealed

We wouldn’t have known about this story had Angela, a Stomp contributor, not asked the wheelchair-bound elderly man about his “grandson” when he was trying to book an appointment for his COVID-19 vaccination at Radin Mas Community Club.

Angela was volunteering there.

To her surprise, the old man told her that Kean Koe, the student from Outram Secondary School, was a boy he encountered when he alighted at the wrong bus stop on the way to the community club.

Kean Koe was apparently attending lessons in Radin Mas during the school holidays.

Quoting the elderly man, “This kind boy helped me as I was lost and brought me here.”

In fact, according to Angela, Kean Koe even went the extra mile.

Not only did Kean Koe brought the old man to the community club, but he also waited patiently for the man to finish his registration before sending the elderly man home.

“He moved me to tears with his awesome act of kindness,” she said, adding that “Kean’s kind deed as a youth speaks volumes of his character. By making the right decision to render assistance, he has done his school and our nation proud.”

“I would like to commend and encourage all students to also emulate such heartwarming gestures and be a caring society.”

Being humble

Kean Koe’s good deed isn’t apparently widely known, mainly because of how humble he is.

The only reason both his school and subsequently, his parents found out about the incident is because Stomp reached out to Outram Secondary School for comment.

According to Ms Guinieve Yeo, vice-principal of Outram Secondary School, “When we informed his parents of what he had done, Kean’s parents shared that they were very surprised as he had not told them about it.”

“I just wanted to help”

When asked, Kean Koe said, “When I saw him, I was thinking about my grandmother who also uses a walking aid.”

“I just wanted to help this elderly man.”

He added, “I didn’t expect to be praised for my act.”

Kudos to him for being the kind of person who demonstrates the best of humanity! Humans of Singapore, you might want to take note!
