Sometimes, life can get a bit too stressful in Singapore.
Maybe you’re swarmed by your troubles and you don’t see a way out.
You’re thinking about taking the easy exit out of life itself.
It can happen to anyone.
It can happen to a child as young as 12 years old.
It can happen to grown adults of 30 years old.
And who else could be more sick of life’s woes than a 72-year-old elderly?
Elderly Woman Attempted Suicide At Little Guilin Lake
As sad as it sounds, it’s true.
Stepping off a stool in front of a short wall, she threw herself into the lake in her despair.
Her attempt would have worked, if not for an elderly British tourist couple who noticed her stool that she left behind.
Upon inspection, they found her floating near the surface of the lake, almost submerged fully, with only her nose and mouth above the water.
She was also apparently clinging onto a branch, so I guess she might have regretted her decision immediately as she hit the water.
Lesley Brewin, the wife of the couple, stayed to ensure she remained afloat till the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived.
However, Brewin eventually jumped into the lake to continue keeping her float and provided mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
“I was focused on saving her at the time. The water was not too deep, and since I’m a diving instructor and have learnt how to rescue people at sea, I knew what to do in such emergencies,” she said.
A true heroine, Mrs Brewin.
Arrested For Suicide Attempt
After being sent to Ng Teng Fong hospital, she was subsequently arrested for attempted suicide.
I’m not sure what the penalty is for attempted suicide, but it definitely couldn’t be the death sentence.
Also, I went to check.
People charged for attempt suicide could be jailed up a year or fined, or both. But that would change soon as a bill has been tabled.
However, only one person in Singapore has been jailed for attempt suicide before, and it was because she tried it 13 times. She was sentenced to eight weeks’ jail.
I also sincerely hope that the woman has sincerely regretted and plans to live out the rest of her life peacefully.
Mental Health Awareness
Jokes aside for a while, depression is a serious issue that must not be overlooked.
Anyone could succumb at any moment and it’s all over once they give up.
If you know anyone struggling with depression, be sure to give them the support that they needed. It could mean everything to them.
The Samaritans of Singapore is also an excellent channel with a 24-hour hotline at 1800-221 4444.
Worth a note whether you are a victim or know someone who is.
If you happen to be contemplating suicide, don’t.
There is so much beauty in the world to be explored.
Life’s never as bad it seems.
