Newsflash: hackers alert.
You might be under threat of a potential intrusion in your privacy, so read carefully.
If you’re the owner of a D-Link router, you might want to check this out.
Security Vulnerabilities
According to Channel News Asia, a number of D-Link routers have been discovered to possess security vulnerabilities.
Security researchers found the vulnerabilities in D-Link’s DIR-800 series of routers and subsequently published their findings on September 8 and 12.
This disconcerting revelation caused Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) to issue a joint advisory on September 15.
Affected products are as follows: DIR-850L, DIR-885L, DIR-890L and DIR-895L.
Why is this so dangerous?
Routers can be mishandled to install malicious firmware and leak users’ information.
Nanyang Polytechnic’s Tin Aung Win told Channel NewsAsia in a phone interview that for the DIR-850L router, the web application is the loophole. It allows users to configure passwords, and that’s the vulnerable part.
By taking advantage of this, hackers can hack into people’s routers without having to know their user ID or password, the manager of NYP’s School of Information Technology explained.
Investigations
D-Link has concluded investigations on the vulnerabilities of the DIR-850L. They will push out a firmware update on 19 September.
D-Link has released a statement, stating, “Product security and customer privacy are important concerns to D-Link. D-Link has a task force and product management team ‘on call’ to provide immediate attention to address evolving security issues and implement appropriate security measures.”
What should you do in the meantime?
According to CSA and IMDA, affected consumers should turn off remote management and use strong passwords for their Wi-Fi, so as to minimise the risk of their device being hacked into.
You can also contemplate deactivating the router’s SharePort feature.
This is until a firmware update is available.
Thoughts
You don’t want someone to know your every little secret, do you? Or your mum to open your laptop and see something really ‘dirty’ (This is either of your own cause or because a hacker planted it for you).
So for the sake of your own privacy, please comply with the instructions above if you’re using an affected router.
And share this so that your friends wouldn’t have to face the same fate.
