Dakota Crescent has always been a mainstay in my life, even though I’m hardly old enough to even have particularly fond memories of it.
Despite my age, however, I have heard enough about it from my grandparents to know that wow, it sure is a place of sentimental value.
And now, I have chanced across some pretty interesting news:
It has been announced that the area will be “redeveloped into a mixed-use area that will include new Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats.”
And yes, the area in question refers to Dakota Crescent.
The dips
According to Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong, the “refreshed Dakota Crescent” will also feature “adaptive re-use of some of the old buildings, convenient amenities, as well as vibrant community spaces”.
“This will provide more public housing options near the city, and allow another generation of Singaporeans to build their own special memories of Dakota Crescent,” Mr Wong said.
With the fact that the Ministry had checked on several possibilities for the state, Mr Wong said that the authorities “will continue to engage stakeholders and involve the wider community as we redevelop (the) area”.
Sentimental value
Over the years, the Dakota Crescent estate has grown to be a place that evokes nostalgia and memories the very moment you think about it.
A documentary that’s part of the Discovery Channel’s Singapore Stories series had previously concentrated on the 59-year-old estate, while rapper Shigga Shay had used the site as a location for his music video “Lion City Boy”.
Just last year, member of Parliament for Mountbatten Lim Biow Chuan had highlighted in parliament last year that “the Dakota Crescent estate was one of the Republic’s first public housing projects, and urged the government to reconsider its plans for redeveloping the estate”.
Cheers
Despite redevelopment plans, the estate’s courtyard, playground and six blocks will be kept.
According to Mr Wong, the “iconic” Dove Playground – a centerpiece of the Dakota Crescent neighbourhood – will be “preserved and repurposed for civic and community uses when the estate undergoes major redevelopment”.
And many former residents cheered on the decision.
So yes, while redevelopment’s definitely in the works, part of the structure that made Dakota Crescent so rich in sentimentality will stay.
And I’m sure that it will only continue to evoke memories for generations to come.
