Everything you need to know about WhatsApp and its end-to-end encryption

Did you know that Whatsapp has recently become the most secure messaging app you can use? Now, all your messages, including texts, photos, videos etc, are all encrypted with a unique algorithm that can only be unlocked by the sender and recipient. That means that all of your message to an individual friend can only be accessed by you and him/her, and nobody else.

This encryption project started in 2014, when Whatsapp begin to apply encryption to messages sent via Android devices. Now, it is working with all other types of mobile devices, so you can be sure that your messages are safe from prying eyes, even from that of Whatsapp itself.

Yes, the encryption is so strong that even Whatsapp, which provides the encryption method, cannot break it. In fact, a Facebook employee (Whatsapp is owned by Facebook) was arrested (and then released) by the Brazilian government after they were unable to cooperate with them and unscramble a user’s message.

Even Google, Facebook and Yahoo’s email and messaging services are not as highly-encrypted. They are able to release personal information to the government when ordered to do so.

Apple has a similar end-to-end encryption for its iMessaging app, but it is less secure as it lacks a unique code for each user. This allows hackers to pose as someone you know and send you a message. With Whatsapp, you will always know if it is really your friend whom you are communicating with.

Even though higher security always seems like a better option, governments have warned that it can be used to spread terrorism and other unwelcomed activities by covering up their tracks. However, Whatsapp was also right when they said that repressive governments that spy on their citizens can also be prevented from doing so.

Guess it’s a double-edged sword then.
