It’s Tuesday morning, and you’ve just woken up from a long, deep sleep. You check your phone and are stunned to find that you have 75 notifications on Facebook, 74 more than you usually get.
You check your account and realise you’ve become rather popular after posting the following status:
“Can’t believe Keeping up with the Kardashians won’t have another season. It’s my favourite show ever!”.
Your friends troll you endlessly for liking a mindless reality show, but unbeknownst to them, it wasn’t even you who shared the status; you were hacked.
The joke’s on them though, because you’re actually a huge fan of the show.
As you’ve discovered, mostly during your adolescence, getting hacked on Facebook is something that can happen to anyone, even a 58-year-old politician.
Ex-PAP Candidate Who Lost In Aljunied Lost His Very Popular & Active Facebook Page Too
Former People’s Action Party’s candidate Victor Lye was forced to take down his Facebook page after it was hacked on Saturday morning (12 Sept).
So, what was the hacker’s choice of gag? Inappropriate adult material? A declaration of love for an opposition party?
Hackers chose to share videos of women selling dresses and pans on Lye’s page instead, accompanied by Vietnamese captions.
The Straits Times reported that Lye wasn’t even aware his Facebook page had been hacked until ST informed him.
The 58-year-old said he was managing the account before he “lost control” and access to it four days ago.
He took down the page, which had nearly 5,000 followers.
He added that he had informed Facebook of the hack and he is in the process of recovering his account.
The videos were unavailable after the page was taken down.
Lost In GE2020
Lye was part of a PAP team that contested the incumbent Worker’s Party (WP) in Aljunied GRC in the 2020 general election.
Just like the previous two elections, PAP lost the constituency to WP, with 40.07% of the vote.
Ever since his loss, some netizens have reportedly taken to his Facebook page to troll him.
Lye, however, is focused on reaching out to residents.
Shortly before the election, the 58-year-old said he did so much outreach in Aljunied that his kids used to hide his shoes because they didn’t want him to go out.
In one PAP promotional video, Lye said: “It’s about what we do on the ground. Not what we say in the air”.
