The first thing you did yesterday, as you do every day, was head to WhatsApp to delete all the chain messages sent by your uncle at five in the morning.

But, weirdly, your app wasn’t working, so you opened the Facebook app to check what the heck was going on, only to discover that Facebook wasn’t working as well.

You wondered if a nuclear holocaust had taken place while you were asleep, wiping out everyone else on Earth.

But then you received a message from your partner saying, “Yo, WhatsApp is down, let’s use Telegram”.

You breathed a sigh of relief and downloaded the Telegram app, making one particular Russian entrepreneur very happy.

Well, it seems like you weren’t the only one who had that idea.

Telegram Founder Said 70 Million People Joined Telegram When Facebook Apps Were Down

The WhatsApp outage yesterday seemed to frustrate and worry about 99% of the world’s population, with the remaining 1% including Pavel Durov, the founder of Telgram.

One tech giant’s loss is another’s gain, as Telegram gained over 70 million new users during the outage, according to Mr Durov.

“The daily growth rate of Telegram exceeded the norm by an order of magnitude, and we welcomed over 70 million refugees from other platforms in one day,” he said (on his Telegram channel, of course).

“I am proud of how our team handled the unprecedented growth because Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users,” he added.

He acknowledged, however, that some users may have experienced slower speed than usual due to the influx of new users on the messaging platform.

Millions Joined Signal As Well

While some flocked to Telegram, others opted for Signal, another messaging app founded in 2018 in the US.

Millions of smartphone users reportedly joined the app yesterday due to the WhatsApp outage.

Signal was famously approved by Edward Snowden, the man who brought to light certain surveillance measures used by the US government.

Mark Zuckerberg Apologises

It was around 12am Singapore time yesterday that Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram went down for nearly six hours.

Many of us suddenly felt disconnected from our friends and family, and the outage showed just how dependent we are on these apps to talk to one another.

That’s why Mark Zuckerberg, the alien who’s doing his best impression of a human, issued an apology on Facebook.
