Guys, heads up.

Ever-popular social media platform Facebook (on which I have like a whopping 109 followers or something) has announced its decision to build its first Asian data centre, and guess which country they chose to incorporate it in?

No, not Malaysia. Or Indonesia. Or Sentosa.

Instead, their first ever Asian data centre will be constructed in sunny Singapore! And where more appropriate to implement such a building, than our dear old…

Jurong?

Facebook builds Asian data centre; no rice included

According to reportsFacebook will be investing more than $1 billion to build its first Asian centre in Asia in Singapore. The establishment is expected to complete production in 2022.

Located in Jurong, the facility will be near where Google is producing its Singapore data centres in an $850 million investment. This comes amidst increasing mobile growth, e-commerce and cloud computing demand rise across the region.

“This will be our first data centre in Asia,” Thomas Furlong, Facebook’s vice president of infrastructure data centres, said at a press conference with local authorities. He indicated that depending on the speed of construction, the estimated completion date of the facility is 2022.

Just four years from now. Just in time for the next World Cup too.

Facebook and World Cup. Coincidence?

I think not.

What’s a data centre?

Now, if you’re new to the Internet, which you should be, here’s a brief lesson: everything you get online comes from a data centre. Even this article that you’re reading: it comes from an Amazon data centre that’s located in Singapore because we host our contents in Amazon.

Yah, everything depends on data centres. They don’t just appear from air.

Homeless? Perk up

Facebook has expressed in a statement that the 170,000 square meter facility (apart from indicating an investment of more than S$1.4 billion ($1 billion), would support hundreds of jobs.

That’s right, my dear jobless pals who are constantly buying newspapers because they don’t have a computer to access online listings, this is it.

With Facebook’s reputation and all, this is the time to brush up all your tech-saavy skills because if there’s one thing I know…

Have experience managing a data centre? This is for you, man. Imagine you being responsible for ensuring that Sandy’s uncle knows what Sandy is having for breakfast daily. That’s a large responsibility, man.

Incidentally, Facebook owns quite a few data centers in the United States, Ireland and Sweden, and it’s currently building a facility in Denmark. However, as I mentioned like 69,000 times earlier on, this is the first data centre in Asia.

Hurrah, Singaporeeee pride.

“The data center isn’t country specific to where users are located…it’s a dynamic process,” said Furlong.
