On 24 July, Aljunied member of parliament (MP) Faisal Manap was warded at the ICU at night due to an unspecified cardiac condition.

Then, it wasn’t revealed what the condition was.

It was reported that the other three MPs in Aljunied GRC will take over his MP duties.

Well, there’s been more information now and it seems that there’s been a slight change of plans.

Former Hougang MP Png Eng Huat Temporarily Covering Faisal Manap for 2 Weeks

On Mr Faisal Manap’s Meet-the-People session on Wednesday (26 July), former Hougang MP Png Eng Huat was spotted filling in for his absent colleague.

Mr Png told The Straits Times that he will be filling in for Mr Manap for the next two weeks.

The former MP for Hougang, Mr Png, had expressed his wish to step down at the end of his term back in 2020, together with Mr Low Thia Kiang and Mr Chen Show Mao.

The trio did not run for the 2020 General Elections.

While he was no longer an active MP, Mr Png says he has relevant experience and understanding of the Aljunied residents and their concerns.

Before becoming the MP for Hougang in 2012, Mr Png had served as the legislative assistance for Mr Manap.

In addition, even though he had retreated from the party frontline, he had been helping out in the backend.

Hougang MP Faisal Manap’s Condition

Not much is known about Mr Manap’s condition. However, it seems there may have been some improvements.

On Tuesday, Mr Manap had reportedly told one of the volunteers that he is ready to leave the ICU for a stepped down ward.

According to Health Management, a stepped down ward is a ward on the level between the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a normal ward.

Volunteers’ & Residents’ Well-Wishes

Most of the volunteers had visited the MP in the hospital.

According to a volunteer at the Meet-the-People Session, they were shocked at Mr Manap’s sudden health condition.

Over the weekend, Mr Faisal Manap was still keeping himself busy visiting the fish farm and distributing durian puffs to residents.

Many residents in his zone were also not aware of his health condition, nor the news that he is in hospital.

Nonetheless, they wished Mr Faisal Manap a quick recovery.

Some of the residents spoken to described Mr Manap as a gentlemen who is helpful with the elderly and low-income residents in the zone.

He is highly rated by people in the GRC, one said.
