With several traffic accidents happening in the recent weeks, it’s hard not to take extra precaution when driving on the roads.

On Monday (1 Mar), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to an accident that happened on the East Coast Parkway (ECP) expressway at 6.45pm.

The accident occurred at the Rochor Road exit, and involved a motorcyclist who hit a protective road divider while turning.

Sadly, the motorcyclist sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead by the SCDF paramedics.

Policemen blocked off the area for investigations, which took more than two and a half hours. Currently, the police have yet to issue a statement.

Other Accidents on the ECP in 2021

This year has only just begun, but 2021 has already seen a few traffic accidents. In particular, the ECP has seen its fair share of road incidents.

On 22 Feb at 9.25am, a 10-car pileup also occurred on the ECP. The accident involved nine cars and a taxi, resulting in two people sustaining minor injuries and one motorist being taken to the hospital. As the accident happened in the rightmost lane of the expressway, traffic flow was not majorly disrupted.

On 9 Jan at 2am, three people were taken to the hospital after a collision on the ECP involving a flipped car. A dashcam video of the accident circulated online showing a car crashing into a road divider. The car then flipped, landing on the other side of the road. The accident happened in the wee hours of the morning and did not cause much disruption for road users.

Driving Safely On The Expressway

Amidst the spate of road accidents happening, here are some tips to ensure your safety and that of your passengers.

Signalling early helps to inform other drivers of your intention, especially when changing lanes. With motorists driving at higher speeds on expressways, other drivers need sufficient time to slow down or stop.

Giving way and being gracious on the road can help prevent many accidents and near misses. Expressways are usually jammed during peak hours, with everyone rushing to their destinations. So, letting a car pass instead of watching the motorist squeeze through a small gap might be the better choice.

In the event of inclement weather or busy traffic, staying alert and maintaining the 2- second rule as a driver allows you to take action according to the situation at hand. When roads are wet and slippery, keep a larger distance apart in case the car skids.

Even though expressways bring about a great deal of convenience to all motorists, everyone has to play their part in keeping the roads safe and accident-free.
