A Chinese idiomatic expression says the road is like a tiger’s mouth.
The roads can be dangerous places if drivers are careless and not situationally aware of traffic conditions.
Yesterday, one man was killed, and seven were injured in a bus-car collision at a junction in Yishun.
The Accident Was On a 4-Way Juncture
The accident occurred at a 4-way juncture between Yishun Avenue 2 and Yishun Central at 10.48 pm.
A GetGo car driver crashed into an SBS Transit bus’s body at high speed after running the red light at the junction. The GetGo vehicle, a SsangYong Tivoli, crushed the right side of the SBS bus, which was bus service 117.
The collision caused the GetGo car’s bonnet to be entirely crushed while denting the right side of the bus. It did shake the bus, but it thankfully did not tip over to its left.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was called to the scene at 10.55 pm.
The accident caused eight injuries. It includes the GetGo driver as well as seven bus passengers.
The paramedics brought six bus passengers to the hospital alongside the man in the GetGo vehicle. He was unconscious when the paramedics took him to the hospital. The other injured bus passenger was not taken to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Hospital Updates After the Accident
Speaking to The Straits Times, Mrs Grace Wu, SBS Transit’s vice-president of customer experience and communications, provided an update that the bus driver had escaped the accident unscathed.
The six injured passengers received treatment at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, a stone’s throw away from the accident scene.
Thankfully, none of the injuries was severe, as they only required outpatient treatment and care at the hospital.
Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.

GetGo’s Track Record of Accidents
GetGo car accidents have been in the headlines before.
Last year, two GetGo accidents went viral on the internet due to the driver’s errant driving skills.
It appears that GetGo car-riding system needs to tighten the eligibility of drivers using their vehicles. Their users are getting the flak for poor driving skills, as seen in the video’s comments section.
Right now, you can use GetGo services with only two requirements. Firstly, you must have a valid driving license. Secondly, if you are 19 to 24, you must have at least one year of driving experience. If you are 25 and above, you can drive right off the bat, even with the P-plate.
Perhaps, GetGo can consider banning all users from eligibility unless they have a year of driving experience, just like BlueSG does with their vehicle-sharing system.
