Have you ever wondered what a love story between rich people is like in Singapore?
Well, apparently, it involves millions of dollars and lawsuits after the relationship breaks down.
Doesn’t that suddenly make you burning your boyfriend’s photos so trivial in comparison?
Here’s what happened to a couple who fell out of love and ended up in court.
A Love Affair
According to The Straits Times, a married businessman from China, Xu Zhigang, bought a $3 million apartment at the Interlace for an air stewardess, Wang Fang, while he was courting her.
The pair first met in 2011 and reconnected near the end of 2013.
Not only that, on the day she signed the purchase documents for the apartment, he told her to order a Mercedes-Benz of her choice.
But that’s not all.
After they began the affair in Feb 2014, Xu had given her plenty of benefits and presents.
One of which was the use of his ATM card, which is linked to his bank account where his monthly salary of $20,000 from his company was deposited.
Xu also got Wang a job at his company, paying her $10,000 for allegedly doing nothing substantial.
Other than that, Xu had also transferred two large sums of money to Wang in July 2014 and Feb 2015.
In total, the amount adds up to US$9.6 million (S$13 million).
Their relationship ended in Nov 2017.
Business Man Sues Former Mistress For Money & Property
In 2019, Xu sued Wang to get her to return the US$9.6 million, the apartment and the car.
His argument? He didn’t “gift” them to her; she was merely holding on to them for him.
He had bought the apartment for Wang to “improve her living conditions” in Singapore.
As for why the house is registered in her name, it’s merely out of convenience.
As for the car, he bought it for business meetings here and not for her.
Again, the car was registered to her name because, well, it makes things more convenient so Wang can handle the administrative issues.
For the US$9.6 million (S$13 million), he had transferred it to Wang so that his creditors in China would not be able to get the money, and it could help him set up outside of China.
At that time, his companies in China had financial difficulty.
Wang’s Defence
In her defence, Wang said that the apartment, car and money were gifts from her to him.
According to Wang, the pair had gone property viewing after she told Xu that her birthday was on 10 Dec.
After she signed the option to purchase the apartment on 12 Dec 2013, Xu brought her to a car showroom and told to pick a model out.
The model she wanted wasn’t available yet and she only managed to purchase one that she wanted in Jan 2014.
As for the money, Wang claims that Xu had given them to her as sincerity and gratitude for staying with him, as well as to give her a “sense of security”.
Former Mistress of Businessman to Return Over USD$9 Million But Get to Keep Condo & Car
On 19 Nov 2020, a verdict was reached regarding the case.
Wang gets to keep the car and apartment.
However, she’ll have to return US$9.4 million (S$13 million) to Xu as Xu’s explanation that he had not transferred the money to her as “gifts”, but more for temporary safekeeping was more valid.
It was pointed out by the judge that in Wang’s journal, while she made special note of the apartment and car as gifts, no mention was made for the transfer of funds.
This is probably the best time to use Facebook’s relationship descriptor: It’s Complicated.
