Imagine this: You’re angry- no, scratch that, you’re furious.
Someone actually attacked your ex-wife and you want to get him back.
Then, your BFF comes to you and say, Hey, man, I’ve got your back. Take this.
Now, before you think this only happens in places like Hong Kong, it actually happened here in Singapore.
Right here in Jurong West, in fact.
Here’s what happened.
Revenge on Another Gang
Muhammad Ikram Abdul Aziz and Amirul Asyraff Muhammad Junus, both 26 years old, had known each other from school since 2012.
In 2016, Ikram joined the Sio Kun Tong secret society. Amirul joined the same gang two years later.
In Jan 2019, Amirul found out that a man, Faris, had beaten up his ex-wife outside Baliza nightclub at Marina Square.
She also told him that Faris was from “Teck Whye”, another gang whose members frequent the nightclub.
Wanting revenge, Amirul told Ikram about the incident.
Ikram, on the other hand, told Amirul not to act rashly, and to think of his young daughter.
He also promised to help his close friend.
Buying A Gun in Johor Bahru
In Feb 2019, Ikram, together with his girlfriend and Amirul, took a trip to Johor Bahru.
He secretly went to a tattoo shop in a shopping mall to buy a gun for S$900.
However, because the man was late to return, Ikram returned to Singapore empty-handed.
The next day, Ikram was contacted by the seller and told that the revolver he wanted was no longer available.
However, if he wanted, he could get a “nicer” handgun if he topped up another S$500.
So he did.
Ikram had wanted to get a gun to scare the Tech Whye gang members and show that they were not to be bullied.
While he had only wanted the gun, he felt pressured to take the bullets as well.
He then bought a holster for S$15 and gloves on Carousell.
Refused To Take The Gun
When Ikram showed him the weapon in Mar 2019, Amirul was shocked and refused to keep the weapon.
Ikram had expected Amirul to “stand up for his ex-wife himself” and take the gun for protection.
Amirul, however, had expected Ikram to accompany him.
It was reported that in the subsequent months after the shocking reveal, Amirul was attacked by Teck Whye gang members.
Caught by the Authorities
On 8 Oct 2019, Ikram was arrested by officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) at the void deck of Blk 731 Jurong West St 72.
When his home was raided, the officers found four bullets in a glove, hidden on the highest shelf in his uncle’s bedroom.
The gun, which was loaded, and a magazine, was found in another cabinet.
Amirul was arrested a day later at 2.25am along Woodlands Street 13.
Ikram was charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm while Amirul was charged with consorting with a person carrying arms.
Sentenced to Jail and Caning
On 1 Mar 2021, Ikram was sentenced to seven years and 10 months’ jail and six strokes of the cane.
He pleaded guilty to one charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.
It was further reported that he was not charged with drug-related or secret society offences.
During his sentencing, District Judge Teo Guan Kee said that Ikram was charged with the “least severe of arms-related offences in the Arms Offences Act”.
While Ikram’s lawyer argued that he had only kept the pistol at home, it was disputed by the fact that Ikram had tried out its features at home.
It was added that the offence was hard to detect, given how it was discovered due to another unrelated offence.
It was added that Ikram had bought a gun and smuggled it into Singapore despite knowing that it was illegal to do so.
