Throughout the ages, ghost stories have fascinated and frightened us.

We laugh at these stories during the day only for them to keep us up at night.

If you’re a believer in the paranormal, or just enjoy a good shiver down your spine, you might be interested in this haunted house story, which happens to take place in an HDB flat.

Facebook User Claims HDB in Jurong West is Haunted

Live in Jurong West? Well, you might be living in a haunted house, says Facebook user Cyrius Lee.

On 18 July, Lee shared a lengthy post on Facebook, recounting paranormal experiences that his friend had in a certain 4-room HDB flat at 840 Jurong West Street 81.

According to Lee, his friend and her husband purchased the flat shortly after viewing it, a decision they now regret.

She claims that in their two and a half years living in the flat, they’ve had several paranormal experiences, which Lee listed in his post.

1. Black Shadow & Someone Calling Out “Mama”

In the first incident, the husband apparently saw a dark shadow darting back and forth at the corner of the room while she was watching television in the living room.

One time, at around 2:00am, she said she heard a voice calling out “Mama!”. When she turned around, however, no one was there, except his wife and daughter who were sleeping soundly.

2. Wife Felt a Push in the Shower

Once, when Lee’s friend was washing her hair in the shower, she felt someone give her a “hard push above her head”.

When she opened her eyes and called out to her daughter, she found that the child was playing in the hall.

3. Daughter Spotted Playing With Mystery Boy

Another time, a neighbour who had recently moved in came over to chat with Lee’s friend and her husband.

They saw the couple’s daughter, who was watching television in the hall.

The next day, the saw the couple again in the lift and asked where their son was, as they had both seen the couple’s daughter playing with a young boy at the staircase.

Lee’s friend and her husband, of course, do not have a son.

4. Transparent Figure Lurking Behind

One day, when the woman was having her shower, she turned around and was shocked to see a “transparent figure like a human” moving from one wall to another.

Scared out of her wits, she directed the showerhead at the apparition.

Yes, if there’s one thing ghosts hate, it’s hot water.

5. Shining Blue Eyes on TV Set

On another occasion, the family was about to sleep after watching television in the hall. Wanting to continue watching the programme in the master bedroom, the woman was about the turn on the television when she saw a “pair of deep lighted shinning blue eyes on the TV screen.”

The woman claimed that the TV set was not even switched on, and that the eyes remained on the screen even after the plug was pulled from the socket.

The woman claims that all these incidents, with the last being the most horrifying, scared them so much that they moved out of that house, even though they had to sell it at a loss.

True or False?

Netizens who are believers of the paranormal might have been inclined to believe this story, except that this urban legend has been around for more than a decade.

In fact, a post on SGForumns in 2006 shows that the post had been copied almost word for word in some passages.

Have a look at the two:

What’s more, the author of the story claimed that the Jurong flat was built on top of a cemetery, but the nearest cemetery built in the area in the past was Bulim Chinese Cemetery, which used to be at Upper Jurong Road.

Yes, this may be hard to come to terms with, but something you read on the internet was not true at all.

Reader: *gasps*

Why Do People Believe in Ghosts?

Paranormal experiences aren’t as spooky as we all think. In fact, they can be explained by faults in our brain.

According to BBC Future, reports of poltergeists moving objects seem to be consistent with damage to regions of the brain responsible for visual processing.

Additionally, some forms of epilepsy can apparently make you feel a “presence”, or a “shadow” lurking in the corner. Confirmation bias may also be at play here.

Sometimes you might even hear marbles dropping on your ceilings or chair dragging. In that case, you should watch this video:

In one experiment conducted by the University of Amsterdam, where participants were showed random light displays, paranormal believers were more likely to “see” a walking figure.

In other words, if you already believe in ghosts, your brain is more likely to look for or “find” some.

Some people also attribute these visions of illusory beings to a lack of control. For instance, if we’re constantly getting rejected for a job or falling ill, we might blame a ‘demon’ or ‘evil spirit’ because we can’t deal with the fact that the universe is often random and beyond our control.

So we make up beliefs to compensate for that feeling of powerlessness.

Whether or not you believe in ghosts, I think we can all agree on one thing: Jurong West is not haunted.

It’s far away from everything else on Earth, so it makes sense that ghosts find the journey there too laborious.
