Your home is supposed to be the place where you can feel the most secure, comfortable, and safe; where you can let your guard down and just be you.
However, there are many unscrupulous people who won’t hesitate to violate that sense of safety for their own gain.
In this situation though, little did the robber knew that the seemingly frail elderly man he encountered during the home invasion is still capable of defending his home from intruders…
…and he will definitely not go down without a fight!
The home invasion and robbery
On May 6, at around 4:35am, there’s a shadow of a man sneaking towards a rental unit at Block 8 along French Road near Jalan Besar.
The shadow is revealed to be a 64-year-old man.
It is still unknown how the robber managed to break into the old man’s home but he managed to make his way into the unit somehow.
However, like most elderly folks, the old man is a light sleeper and was woken up by the intruder.
He confronted the 64YO robber and a scuffle ensued.
Being older and likely frailer than his opponent, the old man ended up falling to the ground and suffered a cut on his head.
According to the news report, the robber then snatched the gold necklace the 81-year-old was wearing on his neck, before making off with an additional S$1,718 in cash.
Thankfully, the police were promptly called to the scene and they managed to apprehend the robber.
What did the neighbours say?
According to the neighbours, the old man, who was unfortunately robbed, lived alone.
Though, his sister will sometimes come to visit him on weekdays.
An unnamed female neighbour told the reporter from Lian He Wan Bao (联合晚报) that she might have heard her elderly neighbour shout out at around 4am.
However, since it was too early in the morning, she wasn’t sure if she heard right – no thanks to morning grogginess, so she dismissed it.
The neighbour also noted that even after being injured during the robbery, the old man still managed to call the police for help, and hence, the robbery was revealed.
Had he not done that, it would probably be a while before the neighbours heard his cries for help… if he managed to remain conscious that is.
Another neighbour, 57-year-old Mr Su, pointed out that the old man moved here a very long time ago and has a very strict daily routine.
He’s usually very friendly to his neighbours too.
Well, regardless, we all hope he has a speedy recovery and that the robber will be persecuted to the full extent of the law!
