China’s blacklist list has been making headlines recently.
From erasing Vicki Zhao off the internet in China to making large stars give up their foreign citizenships, it seems that nobody is taking a break there.
This time, our Chinese-born Singaporean actress, Gong Li, is affected.
Actress Gong Li Reportedly Renouncing Her S’pore Citizenship After She Was Blacklisted in China
Internationally renowned star of Memoirs of A Geisha (2005) and Raise The Road Lantern (1991), Gong Li is said to have reportedly renounced her Singapore citizenship. This is due to the alleged rumour that she is blacklisted in China.
The 55-year-old is also said to be in the process of reapplying to be a Chinese citizen.
She is not the only one that sacrificed foreign citizenship to be a Chinese citizen. Hong Kong actor Nicholas Tse renounced his Canadian citizenship in Sep while Chen Kaige’s son, actor Arthur Chen Feiyu, also renounced his US citizenship in Aug.
Why is Gong Li Allegedly Doing this?
Gong and Tse were rumoured to be on a blacklist of artistes who hold foreign citizenship. Those who were on the list will be “cancelled” and erased from the Internet in China.
One of their top Chinese actresses, Vicki Zhao, who was also said to be on this list because she is a Singapore permanent resident was abruptly erased from the internet in China.
It is believed that Gong does not want to be erased so she allegedly has to do this.
How did Gong Li get Singapore Citizenship?
For those who have tried to get Singapore citizenship for years, you must be wondering this question: How did she get Singapore citizenship in the first place?
Well, Gong married a Singaporean tycoon, Ooi Hoe Seong.
Gong and Ooi tied the knot in 1996. As they kept their love life away from the public eye most of the time, it is unknown if they have any children together.
In early 2008, Gong applied for Singapore citizenship and she received her Singapore citizenship certificate in Nov that year.
Around a year after receiving Singapore citizenship, Gong divorced Ooi.
In 2019, Gong married French electronic musician, Jean-Michel Jarre. Despite the divorce and the new marriage, Gong still retained Singapore citizenship.
